Panthers Swept by Hilbert

Panthers Swept by Hilbert

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team played its first games in front of a home crowd on Wednesday but was unable to keep up with Hilbert as they lost both games of the doubleheader.

Game 1:

The Panthers were able to jump out to an early lead, but the visitors scored 10 unanswered runs over the final three innings of play to win the game 13-5.

  • Senior lefty Alex Fetter started for the Panthers and was able to put up a zero in the first inning. After a leadoff infield single, Fetter was able to get a strikeout and a fly ball to center which resulted in the speedy Hilbert leadoff batter to move to third base. With two down, Fetter battled back from a 3-1 count to strike out the Hawk's cleanup hitter and get out of the first unscathed.
  • In the bottom of the first, the Panthers took advantage of a two-out error to rally and score three runs. Evan Fragela reached on a throwing error and after a Jake McNabb walk, scored as Justin Dattoli delivered a line-drive single to left. Noah Meyers kept the inning going, as he followed with a double off of the fence in left field, putting the Panthers ahead 3-0.
  • The momentum did not stay with the Panthers for long as the Hawks came right back with three runs of their own in the 2nd. After an error to start the inning, Fetter loaded the bases with an infield single and a walk. He then allowed a double down the leftfield line scoring two runs. Fetter settled down and struck out the next batter before getting some defensive help to end the inning.
  • As the lineup turned over with runners on 2nd and 3rd, Fetter induced a ground ball to shortstop. Kevin Rehak made the play and threw to get the runner out at third base. With the runner caught in a rundown, Justin Dattoli chased him down for the first out and then was able to dive to the 2nd base bag to tag out the batter trying to advance to 2nd to end the inning. The third run scored on the play, but the Panthers were able to avoid further damage in the inning.
  • The Panthers went down in order in their half of the second, and the following inning saw both teams put runners on base, but were unable to push a run across.
  • In the bottom of the 4th, the Panthers were able to score two runs to retake the lead. After he was given a second life on a dropped foul pop-up, David Gebhard led off the inning with a single off of the Hilbert pitcher. A batter later, Nico Hall drilled a double down the left-field line, moving Gebhard to third. After a pitching change, Rehak was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Following a pop-up to the catcher, Evan Fragela came through in the clutch as he grounded a single through the right side to score two runs and put Pitt-Bradford up 5-3.
  • Hilbert was able to get one of the runs back right away in the 5th. After a one-out double and a walk with a passed ball, Hilbert was able to narrow the deficit with a slowly hit ground out to third. Fetter was able to snag a slow comebacker to end the inning.
  • The Panthers were set down in order in the 5th before the Hawks exploded for 6 runs in the 6th. Fetter was lifted for Shawn Mannering after starting the inning with a single and a walk. Mannering did not fare much better as the first two batters he faced also singled to tie the game at 5 and load the bases. Mannering made a nice defensive play to get the first out of the inning as he charged toward a swinging bunt and made an underhand toss with his glove to force out the runner at the plate.
  • Mannering hit the next batter with a pitch to give Hilbert the lead and then saw a second run score on a slow grounder to second. Following an intentional walk, a run scored on a passed ball, and a single to right cleared the bases and put the Hawks up 10-5. Mannering was replaced by Austin Kitcey after the single, who was able to get a pop-up to end the inning.
  • Pitt-Bradford threatened to cut into the 5-run deficit in their half of the inning. Maxwell Rogers and Nico Hall drew two-out walks, but after another pitching change, two straight Panthers were retired. With two down, Evan Fragela looked to add to his RBI total as he grounded a hit towards the hole on the left side, but a diving stop by the Hilbert third baseman limited him to an infield single and kept the run from scoring. Jake McNabb followed and made strong contact, but grounded out to 2nd to end the inning.
  • Kitcey returned to the mound for the 7th, but the Hawks were able to chase him quickly as they added three more runs. Following a leadoff walk, Kitcey gave up a double, sacrifice fly, and single to score two more. Kitcey was replaced by Joe Long, who saw hit inherited runner steal second, third and advance home on a throwing error to score the third run. Long was able to get a strikeout and fly ball to center to end the inning.
  • The Panthers were set down in order in the 7th to end the contest.

Alex Fetter (0-4) got the loss after allowing 6 runs, 4 earned, in 5+ innings of work. He allowed 6 hits, and 5 walks, and struck out 5. Evan Fragela had the lone multi-hit game for the Panthers as he went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Noah Meyers also had 2 RBIs and Justin Dattoli drove in the 5th run.

Game 2:

The nightcap of the doubleheader saw the Panthers' offense struggle to get into rhythm as the Hawks slowly added runs, eventually winning 8-0.

  • Starting Pitcher Kyler Majka ran into immediate trouble, as he struggled to find his command, walking three of the first 4 batters to load the bases around a strikeout. With the sacks full and one out, Majka got a fly ball to left field, which brought in a run and ended the inning with a second strikeout.
  • The Panthers looked to get the run back in the first as Jake McNabb dropped a one-out single into right field, but Fragela grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the short-lived threat.
  • With the help of a runner caught stealing, Majka worked around a walk and two singles to keep the Hawks from adding to their lead, but the Panthers were unable to get their offense going.
  • Majka got two quick outs to start the third, but struggled with control again, walking two straight batters with two outs. He then gave up a single, double steal, and a single which resulted in 3 more Hilbert runs. Rogers was hit by a pitch to start the bottom half, but the Panthers were unable to bring him around after a sacrifice bunt, sending the game to the 4th, trailing 4-0.
  • Hilbert added a 5th run in the 4th, using a single and double to left-center, but Majka limited the damage with a pop-up and a fly out to right. The Panthers saw a second straight leadoff batter hit by a pitch but quickly erased with another double play.
  • Both teams went down in order in the 5th, but Majka was lifted an inning later after a leadoff single. The Hawks would score two more runs in the inning without the benefit of a hit. Ben Mulhall entered from the bullpen and hit the first batter he faced. After both runners stole bases, Mulhall uncorked a wild pitch, allowing the first run to score. He retired the next three batters on a strikeout and two grounders, but the second run of the inning was able to score on the second groundout.
  • The Panthers were unable to use a Rehak single in the 6th and saw the Hawks push their lead to 8 in the 7th. After striking out the leadoff batter, Mulhall gave up a single and double off the wall in center to tack on a run. He was able to get the next two batters to fly out to center to end the inning and strand the runner on second.
  • Noah Meyers added a single to left-center in the 7th, but the Panthers were only able to add a two-out Gebhard walk.
  • Mulhall put up a 0 in the 8th, working around a two-out single, but the Panthers were unable to take advantage of a fielding error and two-out single in the bottom half of the inning, as runners were left on the corners as Dattoli struck out swinging.
  • Mulhall finished the game in the 9th with another 0, stranding runners on 1st and 2nd before the Panthers went down in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

Kyler Majka (3-2) got the loss after allowing 6 earned runs on 7 hits and 6 walks. He struck out 6 batters. Ben Mulhall threw four innings in relief, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits and a walk. He struck out two. The Panthers were only able to muster four hits in the game. They were all singles from Kevin Rehak, Jake McNabb, Evan Fragela and Noah Meyers.

Pitt-Bradford falls to 7-15 on the year, with an 0-4 record in conference play. They are scheduled to be back in action on Saturday when they host Mount Aloysius for another AMCC doubleheader.
