Late Rally Ends Panther Upset Attempt

Late Rally Ends Panther Upset Attempt

Port Charlotte, Fl. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team saw a late rally end their upset bid over #15 Marietta. The Panthers had a 3-0 through 7 innings using a strong pitching performance from Ryan Boyer but saw the Pioneers score 10 runs in the final two innings to win the game 10-5.

Game Notes:

  • Ryan Boyer dominated the game for his third straight start through 7 innings of play. He allowed only 3 hits in the first 7 innings, never allowing more than one runner to reach base at a time.
  • The Panther offense struggled to find its footing and rally on Marietta pitcher Dalton Wiggins. Tyler Hoops was the only Panther to reach base early on, reaching on back to back singles through the right side in the 1st and 4th innings.
  • With both pitchers shutting down the opposing offense through the first 6 and 1/2 innings of play, the Panthers were finally able to string together a rally in the bottom of the 7th. Robert Sawicki, Jake McNabb and Matt Hair all singled to begin the inning to load the bases with no outs, chasing the starting pitcher. After a pop-up, Sam Dreistadt drew a walk to force in the first run and Kevin Rehak was hit by a pitch for the second.
  • The Panthers went up 3 runs when Tyler Aires beat out a potential double-play ball to bring in the third and continue the inning.
  • Marietta responded to the rally in the 8th with one of their own. Boyer walked the leadoff and then saw him move to second on a passed ball. A single put runners on the corners with no outs and a fielding error allowed the first run to score. Boyer was able to get a strikeout with runners on 2nd and 3rd, but gave up a single to tie the game and end his afternoon.
  • Logan Edmonds entered and struggled to retire any pioneers as they scored 3 more runs in the inning to take a 6-3 lead.
  • After a 123 Panther half of the 8th, The Pioneers were able to score 4 runs off of Alex Miles in the 9th.
  • In their final at-bat, the Panthers were able to string some hits together in a two-out rally. Dreistadt beat out an infield single and then took second on defensive indifference. Kevin Rehak singled to right to bring in Dreistadt.
  • Rehak also took second on defensive indifference and then scored on an Aires single to left.

Leaders:

  • Ryan Boyer (2-2) took the loss despite the strong start. His final line was 7 and 1/3 innings pitched, allowing 4 runs, 3 earned, on 5 hits and a walk. He struck out 10 batters.
  • Logan Edmonds allowed 2 unearned runs finishing the 8th and Alex Miles allowed 4 runs on 4 hits in the 9th.
  • Tyler Hoops was the lone Panther to finish with a multiple-hit game, he went 2-4.
  • Kevin Rehak went 1-3 with a run scored and 2 RBIs.
  • Tyler Aires also drove in 2 runs, finishing 1-4.

The Panthers are now 4-4 on the season. They will be back in action tomorrow when they play Bridgewater State at 5:30 p.m. in Port Charlotte.
