Panthers Fall in Season Opener at Morrisville St.

Morrisville, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Women's Soccer team was unable to overcome an early deficit, as they lost their season-opening game to Morrisville State 3-0.

The Panthers took possession of the ball to start the game, but the hosts were able to get the ball put a long shot into the top corner of the goal on their first attempt, taking only 57 seconds to go ahead. The Panthers were able to muster 3 shots on goal in the first half but were unable to put anything into the Morrisville State goal. On the other side, Pitt-Bradford held Morrisville to 3 more shots on the half, with only one being on target, and was easily saved by senior keeper Emily Bethel.

Things remained similar for the Panthers in the second half as the defense remained stout and turned away Mustang attacks, but a final ball always seemed to be just out of reach for the Panthers. After 52 minutes, the Mustangs were able to double their lead. Emily Bethel made a diving save and a second shot was blocked on the line by a Panther defender, but Pitt-Bradford was unable to clear the ball away and the Mustangs were able to slip a shot into the goal.

With the Panthers pressing for goals, the Mustangs were able to strike back on the counter, adding a third and final goal.

The Panthers' best chance to score came in the 89th minute. After a low cross, Delaney Stowe took a one-time shot that was parried away by the keeper, the shot rebounded to Kihara Gotshall whose follow-up shot missed the net for a goal kick to end the threat.

In goal, Bethel finished the game with 4 saves on 7 shots. The Panthers were able to take 6 shots in the contest, with 4 being on target. Cassidy King and Kihara Gotshall each registered two shots, with one on goal. Jada Luther and Stowe also were able to put shots on goal.

The loss puts the Panthers to 0-1 on the young season. They will have a chance to come right back and look for a win tomorrow, as they will play Cazenovia with kick-off at 1:00 p.m.
