Panthers Unable to Keep Up with High Scoring Lions

Altoona, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team was unable to stay with the highest-scoring team in the conference on Saturday afternoon, as they fell to Penn State-Altoona 79-51.

Game Notes:

  • The Panthers started the game strongly, jumping out to an early lead after an opening basket from the Lions. Jasmin Miller drove inside and hit a layup and following a steal from Jenna Hicks, Shaelyn Snipes was able to race down court hit a layup of her own.
  • After the Lions tied thing sup on the next possession Cassidy King hit a three off a pass from Miller to restore the Panther lead. The Lions responded and retied the game on the following possession, and after a stop took the lead on another three-ball.
  • Penn State-Altoona built momentum off of the back to back threes, scoring 13 out of 14 to create a 9 point lead. Shirleah Ragin hit a three to end the run and the teams traded layups in the final 20 seconds to send the game to the second quarter with the Panthers trailing by 6.
  • The Lions scored 6 straight to open the 2nd and after a Lyric Collins jumper ended the Panther scoring drought hit a three to push their lead to 11. Ragin looked to keep the Panthers within shouting distance with a layup and a three-pointer but saw both baskets answered with Penn State-Altoona threes.
  • In the final minute, both Pitt-Bradford and the Lions hit a three and made a layup to send the game to the halftime break with the score 38-25.
  • Pitt-Bradford started the second half with two straight baskets, one from Cassidy King and another from Jasmin Miller. The following 2 minutes saw the Lions score 6 in a row to restore their lead. 
  • Both teams struggled to score over the final five minutes of the third, sharing 11 points in the span. Two Altoona free throws in the closing seconds sent the game to the final quarter with the Lions leading by 17.
  • Pitt-Bradford was unable to keep up with the Lions in the 4th, as they were outscored 26-15 in the last period. Shaelyn Snipes was able to pour in 7 points in the quarter, but it was not enough to close the gap.

Leaders:

  • Shirleah Ragin returned from injury to lead the Panthers with 12 points. She made 5 of 14 from the field and hit 2 of 3 from beyond the arc. She also grabbed 7 rebounds, dished out 3 assists and recorded 2 steals.
  • Shaelyn Snipes also finished in double figures for the Panthers. 7 of them came in the final period. 

The Panthers are now 2-19 after the loss and have a 2-13 record against AMCC opponents. The Panthers will return to action on Wednesday with their final road trip of the season. They will take on Hilbert with the game beginning at 8:00 p.m.
