Panthers Swept By Pioneers

Panthers Swept By Pioneers

Salamanca, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team struggled to find a rhythm against the Alfred State Pioneers as they were swept in an AMCC doubleheader. The games were moved to the turf field at Vet's Park in Salamanca, N.Y. due to wet field conditions in Bradford.

Game 1:

The Panthers were able to stay with Pioneers for four innings in game one, but a 6-run 5th opened things up, resulting in an 11-0 loss.

  • Reid Tarnowski started for the Panthers and got off to a tough start as Alfred State scored once in the first. Tarnowski walked the leadoff batter and after a line out to right, gave up a double off the wall in left. The Pioneers scored the run on a slow chopper to third which allowed the runner to beat the throw home. Tarnowski settled down after the run scored, getting a force out at third and a strikeout to end the inning.
  • Kevin Rehak led off the bottom of the inning with a walk but was left stranded at second after a sacrifice bunt was followed by a strikeout and a grounder to short.
  • Tarnowski put together a quick 1-2-3 inning in the second but saw his effort matched by his Pioneer counterpart, who struck out two as he set the side down in order.
  • Alfred State added a second run off of Tarnowski in the third. The inning started with a leadoff single and saw the runner move to second on a sacrifice bunt. The runner scored on another singe before Tarnowski retired the next two batters to end the inning.
  • Pitt-Bradford put another runner in scoring position in the bottom of the third when Kevin Rehak hit a double to left-center, but the inning came to a quick end as David Gebhard was set down swinging.
  • Tarnowski put another 0 on the board in the 4th. He got a ground out to begin the frame and after a double, got some help from his battery mate as Jake McNabb threw out the runner trying to steal third. He then got a fly out to left to end the frame.
  • The Panthers went down in order in the 4th as Justin Dattoli grounded into an inning-ending double play.
  • Tarnowski's outing came to an end in the 5th as the Pioneers exploded for 6 runs in the inning. Tarnowski retired the first batter but then allowed a single and back-to-back doubles to extend the deficit to 4. A single through the left side and a walk loaded the bases before Tarnowski walked in a 5th run.
  • He was replaced by Trent Bielak after the walk. Bielak started his appearance with a high pop-up behind the bag at 2nd base. An infield fly was called to retire the batter, but the ball dropped and all three runners advanced a base to score another run. Bielak then gave up a double to left-center which brought in two more before getting a grounder to 2nd to end the rally.
  • The Panthers were not able to respond immediately as they were held to an infield single. Bielak returned to the mound in the 6th and put up a zero around a hit batter.
  • Kevin Rehak led off the bottom of the 6th with his second double of the day, this one down the left-field line. This was followed by a Gebhard walk, but the next three batters were retired in order to strand the runners.
  • The Pioneers were able to tag on three final unearned runs in the 7th. Bielak retired the first two batters on a fly ball and strikeout but saw the inning extended on a fielding error in the infield. After the error, Bielak walked a batter and then gave up a double and a single to right to push the score to 11-0. He loaded the bases with a single and walk, but got a final fly ball to center to end the inning.
  • Pitt-Bradford went down in order in the 7th to end the game.

Reid Tarnowski (1-4) picked up the loss after allowing 8 earned runs on 8 hits in 4 and 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out two. Trent Bielak pitched the final 2 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3 unearned runs on 4 hits. He also struck out two. Pitt-Bradford was only able to muster 3 hits in the game. Kevin Rehak had two of them as he finished the game 2-2 with two doubles and a walk. Noah Meyers picked up the other hit, an infield single.

Game 2:

The nightcap saw the Panthers fall behind early and then explode to a 17 run deficit after the 4th inning before losing with a final score of 20-2 in 7 innings.

  • Alex Miles started for the Panthers and ran into trouble after recording the first out. He gave up a single and a walk to start the rally and then a double to the gap in right-center to score two runs. The next batter singled down the left-field line to bring in the third run. Miles was able to end the inning with consecutive strikeouts.
  • The Panthers threatened to cut into the lead with a two-out rally of their own but ultimately came up short. Evan Fragela doubled to the left-center gap and Jake McNabb drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Noah Meyers was unable to produce a two-out hit however as he went down swinging to end the frame.
  • Miles settled down and worked around a two-out single to put up a zero in the 2nd, and saw his offense threaten to score again in the bottom half. Bret Babcock delivered a single to left with two outs and moved to third as Nico Hall reached base and moved to second on a throwing error. Rehak was intentionally walked to load the bases before Gebhard popped up to end the threat.
  • The game began to get out of hand in the 3rd, as the Pioneers exploded for 8 runs in the inning. They quickly loaded the bases with two walks around a double, and then brought in the 1st run of the inning on a single through the left side. Miles got the first out of the inning on a force play at the plate but was only able to record one other out as he hit a batter to force in one and then allowed a run-scoring single and double to extend the lead to 8. The second out also came at the plate as Andrew Bokulich fired home on a single to right to throw out the runner attempting to score.
  • Miles was replaced by Austin Kitcey after a walk put runners on first and second. Kitcey was not able to put out the fire, as he gave up doubles to the first two batters he faced before getting a grounder to 1st to end the 3rd.
  • The Panthers were only able to put a runner on with a walk in the 3rd, and the Pioneers continued building momentum as they added six more in the 4th. Alfred State loaded the bases with three straight singles to start the inning. Kitcey was able to strike out a batter but was chased after the following batter doubled to left-center to bring in two runs.
  • Kitcey was replaced by Brayden Hageter, but Hageter was also unable to cool off the hot Pioneer bats as both inherited runners and the two more scored as the first two batters he faced doubled to left and then homered to right. After allowing a 3rd straight extra-base hit, a double, Hageter got the second out on a diving grab on a line drive to third base and fielded a comebacker, and threw to first for the third.
  • Pitt-Bradford put two runners on once more in the bottom of the 4th but were once again unable to come up with a two-out hit to end the inning. Alfred State added another run in the 5th as the leadoff batter tripled to center and then scored on a single. Hageter was able to avoid further damage as he induced a double play and struck out a batter to end the frame.
  • Evan Fragela drew a lead-off walk to begin the bottom of the 5th but was left on second after stealing a base.
  • Joe Long replaced Hageter in the 6th and got two quick outs before running into trouble. He walked back-to-back batters before giving up a double to center which brought both runners around. He got the next batter to ground out to third to end the inning.
  • The Panthers once again put the leadoff hitter on base as substitute Jake Soricone was hit by a pitch to start the frame, but he was left on base as the next three batters were set down on strikes and a pop-up.
  • Branson Scarantine took over on the mound for the 7th and quickly set down the Pioneers in order.
  • After the 1-2-3 inning from Scarantine, the Panthers were finally able to stop a long scoreless streak as they scored two runs in the 7th. Fragela drew a one-out walk and then moved to second as McNabb picked up the Panthers' first hit since the 2nd inning as he grounded a single through the right side. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch and then scored as Kyle Kimoto dropped a hit into centerfield. It was Kimoto's first career hit and RBI. He ended up with a double on the play as the Alfred State centerfielder dove and was unable to make the play. The game ended a batter later on a strike out.

Alex Miles (2-3) picked up the loss after allowing 10 earned runs in just 2 and 2/3 innings pitched. Three freshman pitchers combined for the next 3 and 1/3 allowing 10 more earned runs on 12 hits. Branson Scarantine pitched the final inning, retiring the side in order. The Panthers also struggled at the plate, as they only collected four hits. Evan Fragela and Jake McNabb both went 1 for 2 with a run scored and two walks. Kyle Kimoto drove in both runs with his first career hit and Bret Babcock picked up the 4th.

The Panthers fall to 7-17 overall with an 0-6 record in conference play. They will hit the road for their next contest as they are scheduled to travel to Pittsburgh to take on LaRoche on Saturday. The games are scheduled for 1:00 and 3:30 p.m.
