The AMCC Women's Basketball Game of the Week features two teams fighting for playoff contention. The Alfred State Pioneers will be traveling to Hamburg, NY to take on the Hilbert College Hawks on Wednesday evening. Hilbert is tied for fifth place with a 3-7 record, while Alfred State is 2-8 and in seventh place. But it was the Pioneers who prevailed in the two teams' first meeting this season, as Alfred State hung on to the 49-40 victory on Jan. 11.

The Pioneers are fighting for a playoff berth, finding themselves one spot out in seventh place. Freshman G Taylor Benjamin and senior F Faith McCombs have been forces on both sides of the ball for the Pioneers and will need to continue their steady production through the last few games of the season. After returning from injury, Benjamin has had multiple 20+ point games and double-double performances. The Alfred State guard can take over a game and has done so since returning from the sideline. McCombs has been a force on the inside, with two 20-point, 20-rebound double-doubles already, she finds herself in the top ten in the NCAA in rebounds per game. McCombs is an almost guaranteed 15 and 15 going into any match-up and will continue to produce through the end of the season.

The fifth-seeded Hilbert College women’s basketball team continues to battle for a spot in the post-season tournament in two weeks. The Hawks, with four games remaining, want to jump into the top four in league rankings in order to host an AMCC first round game for the second year in a row under coach Nicole Bullock’s guidance. Junior G Ashley Schroeder, who is four points away from hitting 1,000 in her four-year career, leads the Hawks in scoring and is ranked fifth in points, second in blocks, second in free throws attempted/made and third in minutes played in the AMCC. She is the engine that fuels Hilbert on the court. Sophomore G Alesia Hamm is a very quiet player on the floor but gets to the glass. She is ranked second in conference play with 5.0 offensive rebounds while averaging 8.4 points per game, and sophomore G Mackenzie Catan can connect from deep as she averages almost five attempts a night.
