SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT WASHED OUT, BEHREND EARNS THIRD STRAIGHT TITLE

SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT WASHED OUT, BEHREND EARNS THIRD STRAIGHT TITLE

For the first time in 15 years, the AMCC softball championship, scheduled for May 5-7 at Penn State Behrend, has been cancelled due to the current and forecasted weather conditions.

"We wanted to give it til Saturday before we made a decision," said AMCC Commissioner Donna Ledwin.  "Mother Nature can be fickle, especially in Erie, but the reality is this weather system is stuck here for another 24 hours, as it is throughout the northeast.  There is just no reasonable expectation to complete the tournament by the NCAA mandated deadline of 6pm Sunday."

As the top seed and by conference policies and procedures, Behrend has been declared the AMCC champion and will receive the league's automatic bid the NCAA Division IIII tournament. The championship is the Lions' third straight title and ninth overall.  Medaille College, as the #2 seed, was named runner-up.

Behrend entered the tournament with a 26-12 mark and was named the regular-season champions with a 16-2 conference record.

The NCAA Tournament pairings will be announced on Monday, May 8 and regional play is scheduled to begin on Friday, May 12.

The AMCC all-conference team and award winners will be announced Tuesday afternoon.
