Behrend Softball Sweeps Marietta on Sunday

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Penn State Behrend softball team picked up a pair of non-conference wins on the road, defeating Marietta 7-2 in the opener and then shutting out the Pioneers 6-0 in the nightcap on Sunday afternoon.

Game One: Penn State Behrend 7, Marietta 2
Records: Penn State Behrend (8-7), Marietta (6-8)

Key Moments: 

* Four different players had a pair of hits for the Lions in the win
* Abby Tingley (Union City, PA/Union City) went the distance and allowed two runs for her fourth win of the season
*
Maria Jones (Wilcox, PA/Johnsonburg) and Britney Shaw (St. Marys, PA/St. Marys) each ripped a double, while Kayla Salvini (McDonald, PA/Fort Cherry) led with a pair of RBIs
* Behrend trailed after the first inning then scored six unanswered runs to take the lead for good
*  The Lions got on the board with two runs on four hits in the third
* Shaw doubled and Jones followed with a single to put runners on the corners
* Lexi Edgett (Frisco, TX/Lone Star) drove in Shaw and then Meghan Petitte (Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) drove in Jones with single to the shortstop for a 2-1 lead
* Behrend tacked on four more runs in the top of the fourth, once again with just four hits to extend it to 6-1
* Jocelyn McNany (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley), Edgett and Salvini added two hits  and Meghan Petitte (Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) each tallied two hits

Game Two: Penn State Behrend 6, Marietta 0

Key Moments: 

* Kayla Lindberg (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) threw a six-hit shutout while fanning six for her fourth win
* M. Jones continued having herself a day with three more hits, including a double and a triple while driving in two runs and scoring a run
* Petitte and Athena Iverson (Pittsburgh, PA/The Ellis School) added two hits apiece
* Behrend scored three runs in the second and three in the top of the seventh for the final margin
* Jones tallied her double in the first inning and then ripped a triple to score the final two runs in the top of the third frame
* The efforts of the defense and Lindberg kept Marietta off the scoreboard while the offense added three more runs in the seventh
* M. Jones started the frame with a single and scored on Petitte's single for a 4-0 lead
* Petitte and Julia Jones (Wilcox, PA/Johnsonburg) scored on the at-bat for Salvini
