Panthers Fall to Lions

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team returned to action on Saturday, falling to the Penn State-Behrend Lions 115-46.

  • The Panthers fell behind early as they struggled to keep up with the Lions' transition play, falling behind 16-5 after 5 minutes. With 4:48 to go in the first, Cassidy King slipped inside and made a layup to start a quick 6-0 run. Following two Panther defensive stops, Hannah Lary made a layup on the break and Avery Benzel made a second-chance basket to cut the lead to 16-11. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the Lions were able to respond, keeping them off the board for the final 3 minutes of play as they scored 13 unanswered to extend their lead to 29-11.
  • The Lions continued the run as the second quarter began, scoring 5 more points in the first 40 seconds of the quarter. Ashley Hall was able to drive to the basket and hit a layup to end the rally. Hall hit a three-pointer from the wing with 6:37 to go in the half, but Penn State-Behrend immediately responded with a three of their own and went on another 11-point unanswered run that was book-ended when hall hit another three on a pass from Cailey Barnett. Hannah Lary scored 5 points late in the half as the Lions took a 65-24 lead into the break.
  • The Panthers were able to put together their highest-scoring period in the third, as they were able to knock down three from beyond the arc on their way to scoring 14 points in the quarter. Alexa Ackerman hit two deep threes and Benzel added a third. Lary added an old-fashioned three-point play and Barnett made a basket inside in the quarter.
  • The Panthers continued to struggle on the offensive end in the fourth as they were only able to score 8 points to close the game. Hannah Lary was able to make all three of her shots in the quarter to score 6 of 8 for the Panthers while adding three rebounds and a steal. Cassidy King added the other basket.

Lary led the Panthers as she scored 16 points. She made 5 of 8 from inside but struggled to find her range as she only shot 1-7 from three. She also made all three free throws she attempted and added 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Cassidy King was the Panthers leading rebounder, as she grabbed 10 total with 5 coming on the offensive glass and 5 in defense. Ashley Hall was the Panthers' next highest scorer, as she finished with 8.

The Panthers fall to 2-11 on the season and are now 0-4 in AMCC play. They will be back in action on Wednesday, as they hit the road and travel to Hilbert for a 5:30 tip in the Buffalo Area.
