  • BEHREND MEN'S VOLLEYBALL NAMED UVC ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

    The Penn State Behrend men's volleyball squad was named to the 2016 United Volleyball Conference (UVC) All-Academic Team for registering a team grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher for the spring semester.

    The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced it's 2015-16 Team Academic Award today and for the first time in the program's history, the Hilbert College men's volleyball team has been honored by the AVCA for its outstanding academic success.

    Penn State Altoona sophomore outside hitter Matt Huey racked up another postseason award on Thursday when he was announced as having been voted to the second team of the All-Eastern College Athletic Conference men's volleyball team.

    Penn State Altoona sophomore outside hitter Matt Huey has been selected as the AMCC men's volleyball Player of the Year.

    Bloomberg played arguably the best volleyball of his career this weekend, helping the Mavericks go 2-0 and capture their second straight NEAC Tournament Championship. On Saturday against Keuka College, Bloomberg had seven kills, three digs, and four total blocks helping Medaille advance. On Sunday against the number two seeded Wildcats of SUNY Poly he was even better, hitting at a .500 clip and finishing with 10 kills, three digs, and four more total blocks. For his efforts, Bloomberg was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player.

    Penn State Altoona men's volleyball swept the Eastern College Athletic Conference's Division III South Region weekly awards, as sophomore outside hitter Matt Huey was named Player of the Week and freshman libero Waldemar Rivera-Berrios was tabbed the Rookie of the Week on Wednesday.

    Huey posted double-digit kill totals in every match during a 2-2 week for the Lions. In a tight 3-2 loss at the strong non-conference foe Juniata on Wednesday, he posted 19 kills to go along with six total blocks, four digs, and three service aces. In a 3-1 win over AMCC opponent Hilbert on Friday, he finished with 18 kills and 11 digs. On Saturday, Huey had 14 kills and three total blocks in a competitive loss to first place AMCC team Medaille before recording 15 kills, eight digs, four aces, and one total block in a 3-2 win over AMCC foe D'Youville. On the week, Huey had 66 kills (3.88 kills per set), 23 digs (1.35 digs per set), 10 total blocks (0.59 blocks per set), and seven aces (0.24 aces per set).

    Schneider played one of the best matches in his career on Thursday night against AMCC foe Penn State-Behrend. Offensively, Schneider had 12 kills, 23 assists, and four service aces. He hit at a .231 clip, while also sharing the team lead in assists. He was just as impressive defensively, coming away with four digs and fiyr blocks in the 3-1 win over the Lions.

    Penn State Altoona men's volleyball sophomore outside hitter Matt Huey was announced as the American Volleyball Coaches Association's Division III National Player of the Week on Tuesday.

    Huey continued his impressive play for the Lions, helping his team go 3-0 in NEAC action on Friday and Saturday. In a 3-1 win over Keuka, he racked up 23 kills, nine digs, and six total blocks. In a 3-0 win versus SUNY Polytechnic on Saturday, he had 15 kills, five digs, and one block. Later that day, he posted 14 kills, nine digs, and four total blocks in a victory over Wells. For the week, Matt had 52 kills (4.73 kills per set), 23 digs (2.09 digs per set), and 11 total blocks (1.00 block per set).

    Penn State Altoona freshman setter Billy Smith has been selected the Eastern College Athletic Conference's Division III South Region Rookie of the Week in men's volleyball.

    Podgorny smacked a team high 44 kills, leading the Hawks to a 2-1 record in a make or break weekend. Podgorny posted a double-double with his 17 kill, 15 dig effort in a five-set victory against SUNY Polytechnic. He led the team in both categories against Poly. Podgorny also led the team with a .389 hitting percentage over the three match period.

    Huey continued to rack up big numbers for the Lions in a 2-1 week of AMCC play. In a loss to Medaille on Friday, the sophomore had 13 kills, six solo blocks, four block assists, and two digs. In a win over D'Youville on Saturday, he finished with 19 kills, eight digs, three aces, two solo blocks, and one block assist. In another win later that day over Hilbert, he tallied 17 kills, eight digs, one ace, one solo block, and two block assists. For the week, Huey had 49 kills (4.08 kills per set), posted a .347 attack percentage, recorded 16 total blocks (1.33 blocks per set), had 18 digs (1.50 digs per set), and served up four aces (0.33 aces per set).

    Huey put up big numbers against a pair of strong non-conference opponents on Saturday. Against Marymount, he had 17 kills, seven digs, and one block assist. Versus Eastern Mennonite, he put up 13 kills, seven digs, one solo block, and four block assists. On the week, Matt finished with 30 kills (5.00 kills per set), 14 digs (2.33 digs per set), and six total blocks (1.00 block per set).

    Huey had another big week for the Lions, averaging 3.63 kills per set and swinging at a .276 clip over a five-game stretch. He also finished the week with 26 digs and 10 total blocks. His 19 kills in Sunday's win over Wells were the most kills in a three-set match in Lions volleyball program history. Huey is currently tops in the conference with 3.67 kills per set.

    One day after being picked as the North Eastern Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Week in men's volleyball, Penn State Altoona senior libero Brandon Stitt was recognized regionally when he was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference's Division III South Region Player of the Week.

    Busha was pivotal in the team's 3-1 week, helping to get the Spartan season back on track. Busha led the team in assists every game, totaling 149 in four games, averaging nearly 10 assists per set. Busha was tied for second on the team with 10 kills against Wells on Saturday while he led the team with 39 assists and was second in digs. Over the four games, Busha racked up 31 digs and 18 kills. He currently leads the AMCC assists by over 100 and is first with 8.64 assists/set. He is also fifth in the conference in digs.

    Schneider helped Medaille to an impressive 3-1 week, including a win over nationally ranked (9) Elmira College. He reached double-digit kills in all four games, including a season-high 19 against Johnson & Wales (RI). He also had a .950 receiving percentage on a team high 120 attempts. His 29 digs were second most for Medaille last week, while also chipping in with seven blocks. Schneider currently ranks second in the AMCC in kills (79) and kills per set (3.29), and is fifth in service aces per set (.38).
  • Tyler Sieczkarek, Hilbert College

    Sieczkarek led the Hawks in their straight-set, league victory over D'Youville. He finished with eight kills (2.67 kills per set) with an impressive .538 attack percentage. He also led the Hawks with three blocks to secure the win at the net. Sieczkarek currently ranks second in the AMCC with a .372 hitting percentage.

    Tetreault leads the Spartans with 49 kills with nine services aces and is second on the team with 29 digs, eight total blocks and is tied for second with five assists. The sophomore tied a career high 18 kills on Jan. 15 in the team's 3-1 loss against Johnson & Wales. At the Kean Tournament, Tetreault played a key role in D'Youville's upset win over the 11th nationally ranked Kean Cougars. He led the team in both kills (15) and digs (10) in the 3-0 victory. Tetreault currently ranks at the top of the AMCC in kills (49), service aces (9), and points per set (3.9).
