  • BEHREND BASEBALL HONORED WITH TEAM ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD

    The Penn State Behrend baseball team was honored with this year's American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award. This award recognizes teams coached by ABCA members that posted a GPA over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the 2016-17 academic year.

    The La Roche College Redhawks are heading to the NCAA Mideast Regional looking to defend their title. The Redhawks will face Keystone College in their opening game on Thursday at Washington & Jefferson in a rematch of last year's College World Series Semifinal.

    Boyer went 2-0 with a 3.60 ERA in 15 innings pitched ... in game three of the Panthers' opening round series versus Penn State Altoona, tossed eight scoreless innings to lead the team to a 10-0 victory ... went seven innings in the Panthers' 9-7 win over Mt. Aloysius ... it was his third straight win in an elimination game for the Panthers ... tied a career-high with nine punchouts against the Mounties.

    Lazor hit .556 (10 for 18) with a home run, six RBI, five runs and two walks as the Redhawks earned their fourth straight AMCC Championship. Lazor, a senior, was a part of all four championship teams.

    Both series in the first round of the AMCC baseball tournament saw significant upsets by #5 Pitt-Bradford and #6 Mount Aloysius College, both of whom will be advancing to the championship round this weekend at #1 La Roche College.

    Beimel pitched the Panthers to a complete game win in game one of team's opening round AMCC series. It was his second win in his last three starts, as he gave up nine hits and two earned runs while striking out four and walking only two batters.

    Hoops hit .533 in four games with a double, a triple, two home runs and nine RBIs. He scored 11 runs and had a 6/3 walk-to-strikeout ratio. In a 5-0 victory over Medaille, Hoops accounted for three of the team's five runs, helping the Panthers secure a postseason berth in their final game of the season. The freshman connected for his first career home run in the team's 18-3 victory over Penn State Altoona in the opening round of the AMCC tournament. Then, in game two against Altoona, he swatted his second homer of the day, a three-run shot. On the season, Hoops hit .382 with two home runs, 20 RBI, 42 runs scored and five stolen bases as a freshman.

    Myers was stellar on the mound for Behrend in a 3-1 victory over #17 La Roche on Saturday. Myers kept the Redhawks off balance all afternoon, allowing seven scattered hits and just one earned run, for a 1.0 ERA, in his complete game nine inning performance. Myers moved to 6-1 on the season and now holds a 2.01 ERA, which is second in the conference. He is second in wins with six and fourth in strikeouts with 46.

    Yard had a stellar week for the Redhawks, as he hit .409 (9 for 22) with four home runs, 10 RBI, nine runs, a triple and a double. He homered three times and provided seven RBI in a double header sweep at Penn State Altoona, while slugging 1.357 in AMCC action.
  • AMCC BASEBALL GAME OF THE WEEK: LA ROCHE AT BEHREND

    The top two baseball teams in the AMCC will square off Saturday afternoon as first place La Roche College (29-7, 14-0 AMCC) travels to Erie, PA to take on second place Penn State Behrend (19-16, 10-4 AMCC) in the AMCC Game of the Week. It is sure to be a battle, as either the Redhawks or the Lions have taken the AMCC baseball title eight of the past nine years, with La Roche winning the past three.
  • Tyler Holland, Pitt-Greensburg, Baseball - Player

    Holland hit a home run in three consecutive games to start the week, including home runs in back-to-back games to wrap up the week before (for a total of five straight games). Holland batted .538 (14 for 26) on the week with five extra base hits. He set a school record for most hits in a game with six, going a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate in the 20-11 win at Mt. Aloysius. Holland finished the week with 11 RBI and nine runs scored of his own.

    Gelvin picked up the save in a big conference win for the Mounties over Medaille. He entered the game with a one run lead in the ninth, with runners on first and second and no outs, surrending zero hits, runs, or walks.
