Hawks Slip at Cazenovia

CAZENOVIA, N.Y.  –  The Hilbert Women's Volleyball team slipped in a straight set loss at Cazenovia College tonight.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score:  Cazenovia  25, 25, 26  |  Hilbert 20, 22, 24
  • Location:  Wildcat Court | Cazenovia
  • Records:   Cazenovia   3-5  I  Hilbert 1-8
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hilbert earned the first point in the opening set off a Katie Kociszewski kill and, after giving the Wildcats four consecutive points, played even with the hosts through nine knotted scores.  The Hawks, on three separate occasions, held a two-point lead but left room for Caz to even the score again.  Tied at 19-all, Hilbert struggled to in their transition and found themselves down, 22-19.  Cazenovia took the first set, 25-20, fueled by their own kill and service ace.
  • The Hawks again jumped out early building a 7-4 advantage off two Hilbert aces and one kill. The Royal and White continued to benefit from Cazenovia's inconsistent hitting and stretched their lead (15-10) off another  kill and service ace.  The Hawks, leading 17-14, gave the Wildcats four of their next five points and the lead, 17-19.  From that point forward, both teams earned their own points and didn't rely on gifts from the opposing team.  The Hawks' Emily Garnett lifted the team with a service ace and kill while McKenna Rice and Katie Kociszewski each added a kill in the 25-22 loss.
  • The third set mirrored the first two set in terms of hitting consistency.  Hilbert earned five of their first nine points which gave them a 9-8 lead.  The score was knotted two more times  (9-9 & 10-10) before Cazenovia found ways to maintain a two-point lead.  Hilbert went on a 7-1 run and built a 21-18 advantage thanks to  Ashley Page who started the run with an ace, while Kociszewski added another kill and Garnett finished it with back-to-back aces.  The Wildcats gave Hilbert a 23-20 advantage which Hilbert then stretched to a 24-22 lead.  Cazenovia earned two of their final four points to rally for the 26-24 victory.
  • Hilbert earned 32 points after collecting 17 kills, 12 service aces, and three  blocks.  The Hawks defense kept play moving with 40 digs.
  • Katie Kociszewski (.400) and Jenna Revak each led with five Hilbert kills while Emily Garnett earned a team-best four service aces.  Michaela Rice added two solo blocks, Ashley Page was credited with eight assists and Casandra Thompson finished with eight digs.
