MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Morgan Grosch earned her first collegiate RBI in the first inning of the softball team's first game on spring break. That run turned out to be Hilbert's only run of the morning game as they fell to Rhode Island College 6-1. A few hours later, the Hawks racked up five hits against Gwynedd Mercy, but they couldn't keep pace in the 10-2 defeat in five innings.
After Hilbert took the 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the opening inning, Rhode Island took advantage of a pair of Hilbert errors to score four runs.
The Hawks were knocking on the door with bases loaded in the fourth, but a third-out fly to center field cut the momentum from Hilbert.
Morgan McNeill went 2 for 3 as the only Hawk to connect more than once.
Anndrea Quiroga was credited with a stolen base and
Rachel Allen went the full distance giving up nine hits and a pair of earned runs.
Rhode Island used two pitchers in the circle to hold the Hawks as the game progressed to the seventh inning. They combined for a 7 hit, 2 walk, four strike-out performance.
In the nightcap,
Hilbert got on the board first in the top of the 2nd, but GW posted three runs in the second, and added three more through the next two innings to build a 6-1 lead.The Hawks tacked one more run in the top of 5th, but GW exploded with four runs to close the game at 10-2 with only two outs.Jaelyn Gotham allowed 10 runs in 4 2/3 innings, walked six and struck out two. Gwyneed Mercy's Kim Machalette went five innings and struck out three, finished with no walks but gave up five hits.
Morgan McNeill, Anndrea Quirosa,
Brittany Cooley and
Hannah Prenoveau each collected a hit, going 1 for 2.
Amanda Hucksoll, the lead-off hitter also connected once and she and McNeill were the two lucky ones to cross home plate.
