Men's Lacrosse Opens With Win, Mathias Leads With Eight Points

NEW CONCORD, OH –    Seven different Hilbert players tallied at least a pair of goals but it was Edward Mathias who led with eight points after Hilbert earned a 15-7 season-opener win over Muskingum this afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS

Mathias notched two goals and dished six assists as transfer senior James Chadwick added seven points while leading with three goals.

Sophomore transfer Michael Dhondt posted his first Hilbert win between the pipes and was credited with 12 saves against 39 shots that were fired his way.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hilbert got on the scoreboard after seven minutes of action knotting the game 1-1.
  • Hilbert scored their second marker less than 90-seconds later but gave up one point with 18-seconds remaining before the end of the first quarter.
  • The Hawks made a big push in the second quarter, out netting Muskingum 6-1 and took a nice 8-3 lead into the break.
  • Liam Doyle opened the second quarter with his first goal at 12:17 and Mathias took the face-off win the back of the net five seconds later starting a 4-1 run.
  • Hilbert held a 13-8 shots on goal advantage, won 9-of-13 face-offs but matched the Fighting Muskies in every other stat-line after 30 minutes of action.
  • Chadwick scored his third goal of the game at the start of the third session (9-3) and the Hawks never looked back from there.
  • After matching offensive efforts in the first quarter, Hilbert out maneuvered the Fighting Muskies the final three quarters (6-1 / 4-2 / 3-2).

GAME NOTES
  • Daniel Flynn tallied the 2020 team's first Man-Down goal with three minutes to go before intermission and Anthony Cappola notched the team's first Man-Up goal with 42-seconds left in the third quarter.
  • Chadwick, besides leading the team in shots and shots on goal (6 / 6), earned game-high honors with 10 ground balls.
  • Joshua Maloney won 10-of-16 face-offs while Anthony Cappola and Donovan Dilbert each  scooped five ground balls through the midfield.
  • Travis Kilanowski (4 ground balls) and Lucas Zelasko caused two turnovers on defense.
  • Hilbert went 1-for-12 in Man-Up opportunities.
