A Low-Scoring Third Quarter Doomed the Hawks In AMCC Action

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert's freshman guard, Taylor Corts, set a personal scoring record, but the Hawks' low scoring third quarter ultimately cost them the game as they slipped in a 67-62 defeat to Pitt-Bradford  in women's basketball tonight.

Hilbert trailed Bradford 18-14 after 10 minutes of play.  But the hosts made up that difference in the second quarter thanks to a pair of shots from downtown and aggressive full court offense transition lay-ups.  The Hawks and Panthers went to the locker room knotted at 29 all.

Hilbert shot almost 43% from the floor and earned 17 rebounds while Bradford hit almost 40% of their shots but went to the foul line five more times, earning three more points from the charity stripe.

Bradford stretched their lead by six points in the third quarter as they came out of the locker room fired up.  Turnovers in the past hurt the Royal and White, but they were whistled for only three in the third session and it was inconsistent shooting which slowed their progress.

The Hawks rebounded in the fourth quarter and out-scored the visitors 20-19, but there was too much ground to cover before the final horn.

Hilbert bettered Bradford in all shooting categories, except from the foul line.  The Hawks hit 41.9% (22.2% from deep) but only 54.5% (6-11) from the foul line.  In contrast, the Panthers went 16-21 from the free throw line and shot 40.7% (20%) from the floor.

Bradford got 22 points from Ali Rinfrette and 20 points from Brittany Watts, a one-two punch inside and out.

Besides Taylor Corts 17 points, Shannon Rogers, Katelyn Proy and Kelsi Ebert netted nine points each.  Ebert shared game-high assists honors with Rinfrette and only Ebert and Emily Gawlak finished with a steal for the Hawks.

Hilbert (2-4, 0-1 AMCC) hits the road this weekend when they travel for their second AMCC game of the season.  The Hawks will battle Penn State Altoona (0-3, 0-1) who dropped their game to Pitt-Greensburg tonight (87-76).  Fans can follow the game via live stats and streaming video by checking out the team's game schedule webpage.
