Tigers Sweep Knights In Home Opener

Springifield, OH- The Wittenberg Tigers met the Knights from St. Norbert in the 2020 season opener. The 1-0 Tigers looked to improve their record as they head into the Jim Coleman Invitational (Jan. 17th-18th). With a clean sweep (25-11, 25-15, 25-16) the Tigers will head into the invitaional with a 2-0 record.

The Tigers took an early lead in the first set gaining a 10-3 lead over the Knights. 20-6 lead over the Knights who could only get 11 points on the board. Wittenberg was able to go on three scoring runs in the first set to take it from St. Norbert with a 25-11 score.

Wittenberg was able to carry momentum into the second set and quickly gained a lead over the Knights. St. Norbert was able to put up a fight but with a six point run, the Tigers were able to defeat them with a score of 25-15.

St. Norbert put up their strongest fight in the third set, putting up 16 points but Wittenberg was able to sustain a lead after a kill from Jackson Tyler in the beginning of the set to give them a 5-3 lead, which quickly became 18-9 before the Tigers swept the Knights in three sets and ending the third with a 25-16 score.

Key Players: Dominic Melchiorre led the Tigers in kills with a total of nine while Jackson Tyler lead in blocks (2) and digs (9).

Up Next: The Tigers will be back in action tomorrow, January 17th for the Jim Coleman Invitational which will run until the 17th. Wittenberg will face off against No. 15 Juniata at 8:00 PM.
