Pioneers Drop Conference Opener

The Alfred State Women's Basketball team traveled to Penn.- St. Altoona for the first conference game of the season. The Pioneers fell 74-52.

The Pioneers kept it close through the first half. At the end of a quarter, Alfred State was down 20-14. The Pioneers had a lead with 1:30 left in the first, up 14-12. The Lions went on a 6-0 run at the end of the quarter to go up 20-14. Faith McCombs (Amityville, NY / Copaigue) had a strong first quarter. McCombs scored 8 points on 3-4 shooting. She finished the game with 17 points on 7-11 shooting. McCombs also tallied nine rebounds. The Blue and Gold kept it close through the second quarter and into halftime, heading into the locker room down 39-30.

The Lions extended their lead over Alfred State in the third, putting the game away in the fourth quarter outscoring Alfred State 36-22 in the second half. Penn.- St. Altoona's Emma Kitko was the game's top scorer with 20 points on 8-13 shooting.

 Falyn Lewis-Ellison (Rexville, NY / Whitesville) and Lindsey Weidman (East Bethany, NY / Notre Dame Batavia) each had eight points on the night for Alfred State. Lewis-Ellison went 4-13 from the field and Weidman went 4-5 off the bench.

The Pioneers continue conference play on Saturday, January 7. They host Pitt.- Greensburg at home, set for a 3 p.m. tip.
