Hawks Volleyball Falls in Four

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Statistically, the game couldn't have been any closer for a four-set match.  D'Youville College came out on top tonight in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game at Hilbert, beating the Hawks by a total of six points.

Hilbert took the opening set, 25-21 behind the setting and hitting combo of Morgan Ott to Amanda Binder

D'Youville then outlasted the Hawks 28-26 to even the match at 1-1 in the second set.  Hilbert dug themselves out of a 5-0 deficit before they took their first lead 11-10.  Both teams endured long rallies with D'Youville tossing back to Hilbert several free-ball digs once the score reached 22-22.

The third set went the Spartans way again as they built a six-point lead (12-6).  Hilbert cut the score to 23-20 but then gave the visitor's their 24th point on a service error.  Hilbert responded again with a Binder kill, followed by a Hilbert service ace pulling within one point, 24-23.  D'Youville knocked down their final kill to jump-up 2-1.

As the previous sets began, Hilbert battled back into the match with back-to-back Ott service aces but still trailed 6-5.  Thanks to a D'Youville hitting error, Hilbert grabbed their first lead, 18-17, and kept their advantage till the Spartans strung together a series of three points and the lead again.  The red and white won the final set and match off a power kill to the floor.

Hilbert closed the match with six more kills (46-40) and five fewer ball handing errors but was on the losing end with two more hitting errors, two fewer service aces, three additional service errors and two additional receiving errors.

Morgan Ott had a complete game collecting 12 kills (.103) and assisting on 27 others.  She added four service aces and two block assists.

Amanda Binder led all players with 18 kills (.261) and two solo blocks as well as a block assist.

Chelsea Adamski posted seven kills and five digs for the Hawks on senior day.

Kamalei Lene reached double digits with 11 assists.

The winless Hawks return to action in two day for their final home game of the 2015 season.  The Houghton Highlanders come to Hilbert for a 7 pm match October 22.
