Women's Basketball Beats La Roche For First Time in 13 Seasons

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Ashley Repine powered her way to a career high, as the Hilbert College women's basketball team earned a 20-point victory over the La Roche College Redhawks this afternoon.

This marks the first times since December 2, 2005 that the women's basketball team earned a victory over La Roche, who has dominated the AMCC league the last seven seasons.

Hilbert maintained their #1 spot in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference league standings (12-1) after they earned the 74-54 win against the 7-5 Redhawks who currently sit in a 3-way tie for third place (with Medaille and Bradford).

The Hawks moved the ball well today and made the extra pass into the paint or on the perimeter setting up an easy shot.  Hilbert made 46.7 percent of their field goal attempts but only made three from behind the arc.

Impressive shooting from the foul line was another key factor in the win.  Hilbert sank 29-of-36 free throws  (80.6%) while limiting La Roche to just 54 points on the day.

The Hawks committed only nine turnovers as their focus was taking care of the ball against the aggressive La Roche defenders.  Hilbert attacked in the full court which forced the Redhawks out of their pressing defense.  The Royal and White took a 22-6 lead with just over two minutes left in the first quarter.

After Hilbert won the opening period (22-12), La Roche battled back and evened the offensive effort in the second session (19-19) yet the Hawks took a 41-31 lead to the break.

Ashley Repine and Kelsi Ebert had already reached double figure scoring with Repine hitting 7-of-9 in the paint while Ebert made 9-of-10 at the charity stripe.

Hilbert continued to stretch their lead by five points in each of the final two quarters to take their 12th AMCC victory as they push to the final league contests.

Six different Hilbert players made trips to foul line, Taylor Corts stepped-up going 6-for-6 and Abbey Monahan hit all four of her attempts.  Ebert finished with 10 freebies.

Repine posted 24 points (10-of-13), eight rebounds and two blocked shots.  Her partner in the paint, Katelyn Proy was aggressive at both ends of the floor, scoring eight points, grabbing seven rebounds along with five blocked shots and four assists, many dumped down inside to Repine.

Emily Gawlak did a great job defensively holding La Roche's leading scorer to just four points on the day.  Gawlak also netted nine points, earned game-high honors with 10 rebounds and added three assists and two blocked shots.

Corts finished with 14 points hitting a pair of deep shots in the second half.

Hilbert returns to action this week when they host their final non-conference game of the season.  Alfred State returns to the Hafner Center January 31 for a 8pm contest.
