Nelson's Bat Lifts Hawks to First Win, Baseball Split Day With Bridgewater State

FT. PIERCE, Fl. – The Hawks baseball team split their double header this afternoon against Bridgewater State on day two at the Florida Coast Spring Training.

Hilbert gave up five runs in the fifth inning, falling 8-3 in the first game before the Hawks posted seven runs spanned over two innings in the night cap 7-3 victory.

Senior Winfred Nelson (3-for-4) hit his first career triple and three different Hawks sprinted for four steals in Hilbert's first victory of the season.

Hilbert 7 – Bridgewater State 3

The nightcap moved quickly through four scoreless innings.  The Hawks strung together a 4-run top the 5th and followed with another three runs in the sixth.  BSU manufactured runs in the bottom of the same innings, but made it home only three times.

Nelson opened the fifth with his three-bagger and made it home off Eric Flores' single RBI.  Ian Moran completed the inning with a 2-run single setting a 4-0 score.

Flores hit his second single of the game and the ensuing throwing error by BSU gave him third base and allowed Connor Duck and Zachary Crane to cross home.  Flores, who also added two stolen bases, finished Hilbert's offensive push with a run off Brandon Zicari's single.

Derek Switzer earned his first win in his first Hilbert start and appearance.  He went 4.1 innings, gave up two earned runs off seven hits and two walks.

Bridgewater State 8 – Hilbert 3

The Bears posted single runs in the top of the second and fourth innings building a 2-0 lead before Hilbert responded with a solo run in the bottom of the fourth.

Connor Duck hit his first collegiate double and found his way to third base off Flores' bat.  Mathew Sokolski tapped Duck home slicing BSU lead in half.

Bridgewater State tacked on six runs in the 5th off six hits as they stretched their lead to 7-1.

With a 2-out count, Flores reached first base off a fielding error and made it back home off Nelson's single up the middle.

Hilbert 91-3) now has a day off before they return to action March 6 with a single 9-inning game against Geneva.  The Hawks will turn-it-around and face the Tornadoes again in a double-header bill the next day, March 7.
