LATROBE, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team broke its recent five-game losing streak in a big way on Thursday, sweeping non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College in a doubleheader at Bearcat Ballfield.

The Lions (5-8) totaled 25 runs and 30 hits over 14 innings of Thursday's twinbill, coming away with 10-3 and 15-8 victories over St. Vincent (4-4).

Game One: Penn State Altoona 10, Saint Vincent 3

Trailing 1-0 through three innings, Penn State Altoona tied the game with a run in the fourth, then broke things open by plating eight runs combined over the fifth and sixth innings.

Kyle Glass (Imler, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) recorded his second victory of the season and third complete game of the year, going all seven innings and yielding three runs while scattering eight hits, allowing one walk, and striking out two batters.

Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, and a run batted in. Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored, and Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and a walk.

Alex Hlivia (State College, PA/State College) and Phaly Moravek (Leesburg, VA/Tuscarora) each walked twice and scored a run, and Garrett Alauzen (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

St. Vincent grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Julian Santana led off the frame with a base hit, moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then scored on a Zach Barberich RBI single to right-center to give the Bearcats the game's first run.

Penn State Altoona finally broke through for a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game. Chamberlain led off with a single, and Hillard followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. One batter later, Moravek walked to load the bases, and Alauzen's sac fly to center scored Chamberlain to make it 1-1.

The Lions broke the game open with a five-run top of the fifth. After Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) led off with a single, Chamberlain's double drove him in to put Penn State Altoona up 2-1. Back-to-back St. Vincent fielding errors in the next two at-bats allowed Chamberlain and Hillard to score, and after another Moravek walk, Alauzen's RBI single and Carey's RBI double extended the Lions' lead to 6-1.

Penn State Altoona tacked three more runs on to its lead in the sixth. With one out, Hlivia drew a walk and Chamberlain followed with a single. The next batter, Hillard, hit a home run to make it 9-1.

St. Vincent got two runs back in the bottom half of the sixth inning, when a Zach Vonstein two-run homer made it 9-3.

But the Lions plated a 10th run in the top of the seventh, when James St. Laurent-Friend (Wake Forest, NC/Wake Forest) led off with a walk and scored on Carey's RBI to center.

Game Two: Penn State Altoona 15, Saint Vincent 8

After a scoreless game through three innings, the Lions exploded to put 15 runs on the board over the next three, earning a big victory in game two.

Eli Wiles (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) picked up his second career win on the mound, going four innings and allowing just one run on four hits and five walks while recording six strikeouts. Adam Wildasin (Hershey, PA/Hershey) tossed one inning in relief, and Bryson Byers (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) pitched the game's final two frames.

Alauzen hit 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Hillard was 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. Timothy Richard (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI, and Grant Barberich (Leesburg, VA/Heritage) was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored.

McClain was 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI, a run scored, and a walk, and Tyreke Green (Altoona, PA/Altoona) went 1-for-2 with a double, two RBI, a run scored, three walks, and a stolen base. Logan Margroum (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) was 1-for-3 with three runs scored and two walks, and Hlivia also drew two walks while Chamberlain had two RBI.

Penn State Altoona drew first blood in the top of the fourth inning. After Margroum's walk and singles from Alauzen and Barberich loaded the bases, Green came through with a two-run double down the right field line to put the Lions up 2-0. Later, Chamberlain's bases-loaded walk scored Barberich to make it 3-0.

In the fifth, Richard reached on a one out double to left-center and later scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Hlivia scored Alauzen from third when he walked with the bases loaded, increasing Penn State Altoona's lead to 5-0.

St. Vincent made it a one-run game by putting four runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth, but Penn State Altoona widened the gap significantly with a 10-run top of the sixth. Alauzen's RBI single preceded a pair of two-run doubles by Barberich and McClain that made it 10-4. Chamberlain's RBI single added another run to the Lions' total, and Hillard hit his second homer of the day with a three-run shot to left-center that put his team up 14-4. Richard's RBI double to right-center set the score at 15-4.

The Bearcats scored four more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Penn State Altoona still sealed up a seven-run victory.

Penn State Altoona baseball gets right back at it tomorrow, Friday, March 18, traveling to Greenville to take on non-conference opponent Thiel College in a single, nine-inning game starting at 2:00 p.m. That contest was originally scheduled for Saturday, March 19, but it was moved up to Friday to avoid inclement weather that is expected to hit the area on Saturday.
