Grosch and McNeill Hit Homers Against the Panthers

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College softball team let two games slip them by this afternoon as they suffered a 3-2 and then a 12-9 defeat to Pitt.-Bradford (15-20, 7-7) who is now riding an eight-game win streak.

Brittany Cooley went 5-for-9 and Jenna Castricone finished at .500 with a 4-for-8 day.

Morgan Grosch and Morgan McNeill each poked their first homeruns of the season as the Hawks fall to 10-16 overall and 3-9 in the AMCC.

GAME 1

Hilbert earned 11 hits in the opening game but only scored twice.  Bradford posted two runs in the top of the third and Morgan NcNeill smashed an RBI double in the bottom half which scored Cooley.

The Hawks knotted the game at 2-2 off a Victoria Dzaak single in the sixth, but Hilbert couldn't contain the Panthers in the top of the seventh when they scored the go-ahead run with a two-out count on the board.  Hilbert stranded two runners on the bags to end the game in defeat.

Cooley and McNeill each went 2-for-4 with McNeill and Victoria Dzaak earning the RBIs in the game.

Rachel Allen struck out five with six hits, but no earned runs in seven innings.

GAME 2

After spotting the Panthers with a 3-1 lead, Hilbert found their grove in the bottom of the fourth when they posted three runs and held a 4-3 lead.

Bradford strung nine hits and two Hilbert errors into nine runs, regaining the lead 12-4 before Hilbert went to bat in the bottom of the fifth.

Faced with two outs, Castricone doubled to left field and then Morgan Grosch earned her first home run of the season scoring a pair of runs.  Alexandria Wankel singled to right field scoring another run prior to Cooley poking a hit to center field for the fourth run in the inning, trimming the lead to 12-8.

McNeill hit her first homer as the first batter in the sixth inning but that new score of 12-9 held through the final out in the bottom of the seventh.

Victoria Dzaak (2-7) went four innings in the circle and gave up 11 hits and five earned runs.

The Hawks will travel to Houghton College April 20th for a 3:30pm double header.  They will return April 22 for another AMCC match, this against Franciscan University.
