Panther Volleyball Drops to 4th After 3-0 Loss at Alfred State

Alfred, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's volleyball team lost its AMCC Game of the Week matchup with Alfred State on Saturday, falling to the 4th seed in the upcoming AMCC tournament.

The Panthers lost three tight sets against the Pioneers. They fell 25-22 in the first and by a larger margin of 25-19 in the second. They also lost the final set 25-22 to close the match.

  • Pitt-Bradford fell behind early in the first set, as they quickly found themselves down 1-7 immediately. Once the Panthers were able to break the Pioneer's serving rally, they quickly worked to erase the deficit, eventually tying the set at 10, and taking a lead after an Olivia Reese kill. Emily Cleveland led the charge in the comeback, tallying three kills in the run.
  • The hosts were able to open up another 3 point lead, but the Panthers battled back once again to tie the set at 17 on a Taylor King block. After a block put the Pioneers up 23-19. the Panthers were able to get back to a one-point deficit on a Kayla Maslowski service ace and hitting error but saw their opponents get a side out and then had an attack error to end the set.
  • The second set began evenly, but this time it was a late Alfred State rally that would impact the Panthers. The two teams were unable to pull away for the majority of the set, as they remained within two points, and were tied at 18-18. After a Kaitlyn Sexton and Tabitha Walker block tied it at 18, the Pioneers scored 5 straight and 7 of 8 to close the set with a 25-19 final.
  • The third and final set saw multiple scoring runs by both teams. After dropping the first two points of the set, Morgan Lorenzo stepped up to serve and led the Panthers to 5 straight points, including three aces. The hosts quickly tied the match with three straight points and then opened up an 8 point lead with a 10-2 scoring run. After Talia Magno ended the run, the Panthers did fight back, scoring 5 more to cut the lead to just 2. Emily Cleveland had a kill in the rally, while King added another block and Sexton picked up a service ace. 
  • Alfred State responded to push their lead back to 6, but the Panthers scored 5 of six to get the deficit back to 2 at 24-22. Unfortunately, for the Panthers, the Pioneers were able to get the final kill and side out to end the match with a 25-22 set three win.

Emily Cleveland led the way for the Panthers, finishing with 13 kills. She also had one ace and a solo block. Setter Tabitha walker picked up 20 more assists and collected 8 digs. Kayla Maslowski was the only Panther to reach double-digit digs, as she finished with 10.

The Panthers finish their regular season with a 17-7 overall record, and a 5-3 record in AMCC play. They have secured the 4th seed in the upcoming AMCC Tournament and will host the #5 seeded La Roche Redhawks in a rematch of the 2019 AMCC quarterfinal. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 3rd in KOA Arena.
