Hawks Grab Win at Mount Aloysius, Going 16-2 In League Play

CRESSON, Pa. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team rebounded in the right direction today and closed the season with a 64-63 road win at Mount Aloysius.

The Hawks, who built a double-digit  lead by the start of the final quarter, survived a massive Mountie rally and earned their 16th AMCC victory of the season.  Mt. Aloysius suffered their second loss to Hilbert this season and dropped to 14-4 in league play.

Taylor Corts and Ashley Repine were the one-two punch Hilbert needed today.  Corts led the Hawks with 19 points, sinking 4-of-8 from beyond the arc and Repine hit seven of her 10 attempts from the floor to collect 16 points.

Emily Gawlak controlled the glass pulling down 14 defensive rebounds while adding 10 points.

Katelyn Proy (six points/four rebounds) and Kelsi Ebert shared team-high honors with five assists each.  Ebert knocked down 6-of-7 from the foul line to score 13 points.

Mount Aloysius started the game in control.  Corts hit a pair of free throws to knot the game at 8-8 and Ebert lifted her team on top with a solo free throw the next trip.  But the hosts drained a deep shot and took a 13-11 lead before the quarter break.

Both team traded buckets at the start of the second quarter until Hilbert went on a 10-2 run taking a 26-19 lead at 4:03.  The Mounties responded with their own 10-2 run to close the half with a 29-28 advantage.

The Hawks built a 35-29 lead just three-minutes into the third quarter after Gawlak converted a traditional three-point play.   Then Taylor Corts drained a deep shot in transition which gave Hilbert their first 10-point lead at 5:44 (39-29).  Corts repeated with another old fashioned three point play for a 12 point advantage with 3:42 left.

Trailing 51-40 at the start of the fourth quarter, Mt. Aloysius  opened the fourth quarter in a press.  The Hawks handled the pressure without a problem but they went cold from the floor and suffered several empty trips.

Mt. Aloysius chipped away at the spread and made it a one point game (54-53) after a Hilbert turnover with six minutes remaining in the game.

The hosts took their first lead in the quarter off a three pointer, but Ebert flipped the score back in Hilbert's favor with a pair of shots from the foul line the next trip.

Mt. Aloysius threw the ball away on their next possession and Repine's lay-up stretched Hilbert's lead to three.

Mt. Aloysius scored on a driving lay-up, and Hilbert called a timeout with 52.4 left in the game with a 64-63 lead.

Hilbert missed a few shots on their offensive end and then had to play defense for the final 24 seconds.

Proy blocked a shot in the paint and then was fouled when she grabbed the defensive rebound.

Hilbert inbounded the ball on the baseline and threw it away against the pressure.   Once the Mounties missed shot hit the ground, the Hawks created a jump ball with :01.7 on the clock.

The hosts called a timeout and took the ball out of bounds under their hoop after they designed a last second shot.

Even with 6-2 Katelyn Proy limiting the passing lanes, Mt. Aloysius was able to pass the ball inbounds under the hoop.  Ashley Repine poked a shot away for the win.
