Women's Basketball Picks Up First Win of Season

HAMBURG, N.Y. – After a slow and sloppy opening quarter, Hilbert pulled it together and coasted to an 80-41 non-conference victory over Alfred University in women's basketball this afternoon.

Four different Hawks scored in double figures as Hilbert posted their largest margin of victory with the 39-point win against the Empire 8 opponent.

Emily Gawlak was in a zone this afternoon leading the hosts with 19 points behind 6-of-9 shooting from the floor (3-of-4 deep), and earned team-high honors in rebounds (7), assists (4) and steals (4).

Morgan McNeill came off the bench and chipped in 12 points while Taylor Corts and Kelsi Ebert finished with matching 10's.

"Today's game was a great team win with everyone stepping up and doing their job," said coach Amy Senefelder.  "We followed the game plan and we are happy with the contribution we got from everyone who stepped on the floor.  We are making improvements everyday."

Hilbert took a 2-point lead heading into the second quarter.  The Hawks expanded that 10-8 advantage by padding the second quarter with nine more points for the 30-21 half time score.

After the initial opening half, where both team combined for 32 turnovers, Hilbert got serious in the second session with a 50-point outburst while limiting the Saxons to just 20 points.

The Hawks finished the game hitting 41.8% of the field goal attempts, going 9-of-21 from beyond the 3-point line, and sank 25 of their 33 free throw attempts (75.8%).

Alfred struggled offensively as they finished with a .231 field goal percentage for the game.

Hilbert's interior defense was a major factor in the Saxon's low percentages.

Katelyn Proy was credited with only four blocks but her long and active arms altered shots and changed passing angles in the paint. Taylor Corts collected multiple blocked shots (5) and defensive rebounds in succession.

Hilbert outrebounded the Saxons 44-34 with an 18-offensive rebound effort converting 28 second chance points. The Hawks tallied 26 points off the bench.

Hilbert (1-3) returns to action Monday, November 27 when they travel to SUNYAC and somewhat-local opponent, Fredonia State for a 7pm tip-off.  The Blue Devils were defeated 73-69 by Alfred on Tuesday, November 21.
