HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College kept things close in the first two sets against Penn State Behrend yet let the match slip away to the Lions in three straight sets in women's volleyball tonight.
The Hawks (0-13, 0-4 AMCC) trailed Behrend by less than five points midway through the opening set, but strong serving by the Lions allowed them to stretch an 18-10 score to 25-10 for the win.
Hilbert kept thing interesting in the middle set with longer rallies and six kills to their credit before Behrend closed the game with a series of consecutive kills for the 25-16 victory.
Behrend (11-7, 4-0 AMCC) opened the final set with seven kills and rushed to a 12-5 lead, which forced a Hilbert timeout. The Hawks never recovered and dropped the final set 25-7.
Ashley Repine led with five kills and five digs.
Sara Trzepkowski earned a team-high eight digs and assisted on eight of Hilbert's 11 kills.
Today marked the first game in 11 contests where the Hawks did not finish a play at the net with a defensive block.
Hilbert hits the road for a pair of AMCC contest this weekend. The Hawks will face Penn State Altoona (12 pm) in a neutral site game hosted by Pitt-Greensburg. Hilbert then will battle the hosts at 4pm before heading back to Hamburg.
