Botz Becomes All-Time Wins Leader as Tartans Celebrate Seniors with 7-0 Win Against Penn State Altoona

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team, ranked 18th in the nation, hosted Penn State Altoona on Saturday, October 23 in non-conference action and celebrated the seniors prior to the 7-0 victory. Graduate student Carolyn Botz (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) became the Tartans all-time wins leader with 34 career wins after earning her 10th win of the season while junior Alex Adams (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) recorded her first career hat trick.

Adams started the scoring in the ninth minute after sophomore Breana Valentovish (Cranberry Township, Pa. / Seneca Valley) put a throw-in to the near post where freshman Maria Askounis (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Marian) chested it down and tipped a pass to Adams in the box. Adams promptly fired a shot to the near post for her eighth score of the season. Adams later scored in the 47th minute and the 59th minute.

Junior defender Nikki Hasson (Torrance, Calif. / California Academy of Mathematics and Science) scored her second goal of the season in the 16th minute after senior Marissa McAfee (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth) put a diagonal pass to the edge of the 18-yard box where Hasson snuck by a midfielder for a free shot on frame with her right foot to the low left post.

Sophomore Cecelia Dieterich (South Paris, Maine / Oxford) was involved in the next two goals as she scored in the 25th minute and assisted on a goal in the 28th minute. The midfielder's goal came from the left corner of the 18-yard box after freshman Alana Frederick (New York, N.Y. / Sacred Heart Greenwich) tipped a pass to her which she had to touch around a defender before taking the shot to the far corner. Dieterich then got the assist on a goal by Frederick when her shot hit the crossbar ahead of Frederick finishing the rebound.

Freshman Anna Maria Ferrante (Lynnfield, Mass. / Lynnfield) was the other goal scorer for the Tartans, as she scored her first career goal in the 89th minute with a low shot from the right corner of the 18-yard box to the left post.

The Tartans will next return to University Athletic Association (UAA) action when they host Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, October 29 at 5:00 p.m.
