Baseball Sweeps D'Youville ; Wurstner HIts Grand Slam

WEST SENECA, N.Y. – For the first time since 2012, the Hilbert College baseball earned an AMCC sweep today with their lopsided 21-1 and 9-0 victories over D'Youville College in games played at Centennial Park in West Seneca.

Daniel Christmann continued his hitting tear as he went 7 for 9 with 5RBIs and scored five runs after connecting on 4 of  7 (3RBI) yesterday against the league leaders, La Roche College.

Anthony Wurstner, Mark Anderson and Kevin Moore all poked one over the fence today to earn their first home runs of the season helping to lift Hilbert to a season high 30 runs in 14 innings of work with zero (0) fielding or throwing errors.

Sal Carroccia and Justin Hulbert picked up wins today as they both retired early in the their games.  The first crew of Carroccia (3), Winfred Nelson, Andrew Cartaginese (2) and Michael Vogel (2) combined for a 5 hit, 7K, two-walk performance to hold the Spartans to one run.

Hulbert went four full innings and struck out five of the 14 batters faced.  Logan Parachoniak fanned two batters in innings five and six.  Tyler Wangler and Joshua Maier closed the game on the mound to secure the shut-out win.

Daniel Christmann started the game for Hilbert with another hit and was a perfect 'four' all around – hits/appearances, RBI and scored runs.  Anthony Wurstner shined with 7RBIs and Ryan Bonafede and Mark Anderson knocked in three each.

The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning then exploded for 11 markers the next inning.

After Hilbert loaded the bases with three consecutive bunts, Wurstner hit his grand slam to the left field knocking in Chris Shriver, Daniel Christmann and Bradley Perrin

Wurstner tacked on another RBI before the final out in the second inning which gave Hilbert a 13-0 advantage.

The hits kept coming, as Hilbert padded five more runs in the 3rd with Bonafede credited with a 2-run single setting an 18-0 score.

As a team, Hilbert connected for 20 hits on 42 appearances.

The Hawks found their stride in the third inning after each team went scoreless early in the second game.

Christmann started the run with a single through the right side and finished the march with a double to the right field to push Flores home for the 7th run of the inning.

Kevin Moore went 2 for 4 with a two-run homer in the 4th to set the final 9 runs.

Christmann went 3 for 5 and Mark Anderson had another stellar game at the bag, connecting on three of his four appearances.

Hilbert, with one home game remaining on their schedule, will host Medaille College on the Hawks diamond Tuesday, April 29.

Hilbert (7-22, 4-10) needs to sweep the Mavs in order to have a chance of making the AMCC post-season play-offs.

The Hawks will also celebrate Senior Day and honor Daniel Christmann and Matt Goraj Tuesday.
