Softball Splits and Picks Up First Win of 2015

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Phoenix Rollek went 3 for 3 and knocked in two runs in Hilbert's end of the day 9-5 victory over Principia after the Hawks dropped a 16-0 loss to Randolph College March 10.

Hilbert picked up their first win during the spring break portion of their 2015 season with one day remaining in their southern trip.

The Hawks strung together five 3rd inning runs behind Rollek's 2 RBI single.  Rachel Collier started the push with a single RBI then two fielder's choice hits sent the last two runners home as Hilbert built the 5-0 advantage.

Principia connected twice to trim the lead to three runs, but Hilbert responded again with a single run in the fourth and three more unearned runs in the sixth inning.  Principia's rally fell short but they made it interesting with the three-run bottom of the 7th push.

Rachel Collier went 2 for 4 with a double bagger in the sixth inning.  Rebecca Bailey picked up a stolen base and Jaelyn Gotham tossed a complete game to pick up her first win of the year.  The junior was credited with two strike outs while giving up 10 hits and four earned runs.

Earlier in the day, Randolph opened the day ready to swing their bats.  The only inning the Wildcats didn't put runs on the board was in the second after they already held a 3-0 lead.  Randolph found home six times in the top of the 5th inning to force an early decision since Hilbert went score-less in the bottom half.

Jenna Castricone and Crystal Hailey went 1 for 2 as the only Hawks to make contact with the ball at the plate.  Randolph held Hilbert to only 16 plate appearances while the Wildcats swung 33 times and finished with 14 hits.

TylerLynn Langer started the game, went three innings and gave up six hits, five earned runs with one walk.  Victoria Dzaak finished the last two innings with two earned runs off eight hits.

Hilbert (1-5) will close out their warm-weather visit March 11 against the College of Saint Elizabeth and Wesley College.
