Panthers Lose Nailbiter at Medaille

Buffalo, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team was unable to hold onto their 4th quarter lead, as they fell 42-40 to Medaille.

Game Notes:

  • Pitt-Bradford used a stingy defense to build an early lead in the contest. They held the Mavericks scoreless for the opening 5 minutes of play while scoring 5 points of their own. Jasmin Miller scored all 5 early points for the Panthers, banking in a three from the wing and then following that up with a driving layup inside. After the Mavericks were able to tie the game, La'Shyra Williams made two baskets inside to give the Panthers a 9-5 lead after one quarter.
  • The Panthers were quickly able to push their advantage to 9 points within the first minute and a half of the second. Jenna Hicks hit a mid-range jumper and two possessions later Lyric Collins hit a deep three from the left-wing. Hicks added another jump shot a minute later, but the Panthers went cold over the last 7 minutes of the half. Williams added two free throws, but the Panthers were unable to score any further in the second. The Mavericks slowly whittled away at the lead, sending the game to the break with the Panthers leading 18-13.
  • Miller opened the second half with a three from the right-wing and following a Medaille layup, she hit a second three to get the lead to double digits.
  • The Mavericks then went on a 12-5 run over the next 6 minutes to cut the Panther lead to 3. The only Pitt-Bradford baskets in the stretch were another miller three-pointer and a deep two from Collins. Jenna Hicks hit two free throws in the final minute of the third to put the Panthers up 32-27 heading into the final period of play.
  • Hicks added to the lead to begin the fourth, making a layup on the first possession of the quarter. Shaelyn Snipes made two free throws in the quarter, and Williams hit four in a row to put the Panthers up 8 with 6:33 to go.
  • The fourth Williams free throw was the last for the Panthers, as they were held scoreless for the remainder of play. The Mavericks tied the game at 40 with 34 seconds to go and took the lead from the free-throw line in the final 10 seconds after the Panthers were unable to get a shot up to take the lead. The Panthers had one final opportunity only down 1 point but turned the ball over one final time to close the game.

Leaders:

  • Jasmin Miller led all scorers with 14 points. She made 4 of 6 from three.
  • La'Shyra Williams recorded a double-double for the Panthers, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds. She also picked up 1 assist, 2 steals and a block. She made 7 of 8 from the free-throw line.
