Baseball Swept by Alfred State in AMCC Opener

BOLIVAR, N.Y. – The Penn State Altoona baseball team finally got its 2022 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule started on Sunday afternoon, when the Lions took on Alfred State College in a doubleheader.

Due to wet field conditions at Stewart Athletic Field, the location of the games was moved to Bolivar-Richburg High School in Bolivar, N.Y., with Penn State Altoona remaining the designated home team for both contests.

The Lions (8-12, 0-2 AMCC) were blanked 4-0 in game one by Alfred State (12-15, 6-0 AMCC) before being overpowered 13-3 in game two.

Game One: Alfred State 4, Penn State Altoona 0

Penn State Altoona managed just one hit, as Alfred State was led by a strong pitching start and solid defense. The Pioneers came up with some key hits to do enough at the plate to hand the Lions a loss.

Kyle Glass (Imler, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) tossed his fourth complete game of the season in a losing effort, going seven innings and allowing three earned runs while striking out five batters. Corey Chamberlain (Claysburg, PA/Claysburg-Kimmel) collected Penn State Altoona's lone hit of the game.

Alfred State scored the game's first run in the top of the second, when Sam Dickerson's RBI double to left-center put the visiting team up 1-0.

The Pioneers took advantage of some Penn State Altoona miscues in the fifth to increase their lead to 3-0. Elijah Barinas tripled to right-center, then scored on a fielding error in the next play to account for his team's second run. Shortly thereafter, Gavin Moore scored on a balk to give Alfred State a three-run advantage.

Matteo Avallone's RBI single to left in the seventh padded Alfred State's lead, upping it to 4-0.

Game Two: Alfred State 13, Penn State Altoona 3

Penn State Altoona started the game by securing some momentum, putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. But Alfred State locked down the rest of the way, holding the Lions scoreless over the final eight innings while scoring 13 runs.

Timothy Richard (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) went 1-for-3 with two RBI, and Chamberlain was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.

Tristin Lockett (Mifflin County, PA/Mifflin County) took the loss on the mound, starting the game and pitching four innings while surrendering seven runs. Adam Wildasin (Hershey, PA/Hershey), Mack Meengs (State College, PA/State College), Cole Brechbill (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown), and Collin Hickey (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) each saw time out of the bullpen.

Penn State Altoona appeared to be bouncing back from its game one loss by putting together a three-run bottom of the first inning. After Grayson McClain (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) drew a leadoff walk, Chamberlain's double to left-center scored him to drive in Penn State Altoona's first run of the day. An error allowed Jake Hillard (State College, PA/State College) to reach, putting two runners aboard, and Richard capitalized with a two RBI base hit up the middle to make it 3-0.

But Alfred State countered with four runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead. Jack Curabba's two-run single cut the Lions' lead to one, and RBI groundouts by Nick Serce and Avallone put the Pioneers up 4-3.

Alfred State increased its advantage to 6-3 in the fourth, when Devin Mersmann scored on a wild pitch and Barinas delivered a sacrifice fly to right. Mersmann's sac bunt in the fifth drove in another run to make it 7-3.

The Pioneers went on to score six more runs, padding their lead and defeating Penn State Altoona by 10.

Penn State Altoona returns to action on Tuesday, April 12, traveling to Pittsburgh to face AMCC opponent La Roche University in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
