Panthers Fall to #4 Illinois Wesleyan and Baldwin Wallace

Tucson, Az. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team played two games on their 2nd day of action in Tucson. They started the day with a 6-0 loss to #4 Illinois Wesleyan and then followed that with an 8-3 loss to Baldwin Wallace.

Game 1:

  • Jordan Uhing dominated the first 5 innings of play for the Panthers, shutting down the Titans offense through the early part of play. Uhing allowed only 2 walks through the first 5 innings. She struck out 5 batters.
  • Chloe Cordova recorded the first hit for either team in the 4th. She ripped a single to right field to start the inning. The Panthers were unable to move her further, as the next three batters were retired to end the inning.
  • The Titans finally figured Uhing out in the top of the 6th. The first four batters of the inning hit a double, triple single and then a home run to chase Uhing. Kerrigan Hoffmann entered for the Panthers and allowed two more runs to score in the 6th before getting out of the inning.
  • In the 7th, Hoffmann allowed two singles to lead off the inning, but then settled down and retired the next three batters.
  • The Panthers were retired in order in the 7th to end the game, as Cordova's single was their lone base runner of the game.

Leaders:

  • Jordan Uhing (1-4) picked up the loss despite keeping a no-hitter through 5 innings. She allowed 4 earned runs in 5+ innings of work on 4 hits and 2 walks. She struck out 5 batters.
  • Kerrigan Hoffmann pitched the final 2 innings, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 4 hits.
  • Chloe Cordova picked up the lone hit for the Panthers. She finished 1-3.

Game 2:

  • The Panthers got off to a better spot in the second contest of the day, as they put two runners on in the first inning. Kendra Colegrove drew a one-out walk and Gabby Carpenter followed with a single to right. The Panthers were unable to go further as Baldwin Wallace was able to strike out the next two batters to end the inning.
  • Abby Hinkley started the game for the Panthers and after retiring the side in order in the first, ran into trouble in her second inning of work. She allowed the first six batters to reach base, scoring 5 runs, before being lifted for Jordan Uhing.
  • Uhing allowed the inherited runner to score but was able to get out of the inning without further damage.
  • The Panthers looked to strike back in their next at-bat but left two runners stranded again. Betty Fratercangelo led off with a single to right and after two strikeouts Carpenter also singled to right to move her to second. Sophie Fratercangelo looked to open the Panther account, but lined out to the pitcher to end the inning.
  • After zeroes in the bottom of the third and top of the 4th, Baldwin Wallace used a walk and three hits to tack on two more runs.
  • Facing an early end to the game, the Panthers were able to stage a 2-out rally in the 5th to extend the game. Chloe Cordova reached on a fielder's choice with one out and moved to third on a Colegrove single to left.
  • Following a Colegrove steal of second, Gabby Carpenter rapped her third hit of the game back up the middle to bring in Cordova. She also stole second base and then both runners scored when Sophie Fratercangelo reached on an error.
  • Uhing put up two more zeroes in the 5th and 6th allowing the panthers one final chance to score. Cordova hit a single up the middle in the 7th but was thrown out attempting to steal to end the game.

Leaders:

  • Abby Hinkley (0-2) took the loss after allowing 6 earned runs in 1+ innings pitched. She struck out 1 batter.
  • Jordan Uhing pitched the final 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. She struck out 3 batters.
  • Gabby Carpenter went 3-3 in the game for the Panthers. She scored 1 run and drove in another.

The Panthers are now 1-7 on the season. They will have a day off and return to action on Friday. They are scheduled to take on Bethany Lutheran and Howard Payne at 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
