Panthers Streak Halted by Penn State-Behrend

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's volleyball team saw its 13-match unbeaten run come to an abrupt stop on Wednesday, as they fell to rival Penn State-Behrend 3-0.

The Panthers fell behind the more experienced Lions right away, dropping the first two sets 25-19, and the final 25-12.

  • The Panthers saw the Lions jump out to a quick 8-4 lead in the first, but were able to counter after a time out, scoring 4 straight points with Emily Cleveland at the service line to tie the score. The visitors were able to push a lead back to 6, only to see another run of four straight points pull the Panthers back within two. Tabitha Walker started the rally, while Olivia Reese added a kill, and Jordan Sitler, Taylor King and Reese had a triple block. Pitt-Bradford was able to keep the match within two until a late 4 point run saw the Lions take a 1 set lead.
  • The Panthers looked to gain momentum in the second set, as they quickly got out to a 6-3 lead. The early run was punctuated by two Emily Cleveland kills. The Lions were able to slowly erase the lead and eventually go up three points themselves. A Kaitlyn Sexton kill saw the Panthers tie the set at 13, and the teams would trade points late into the set. Once again, the visitors closed strong, ending on a 6-1 run to close the set and take a commanding lead.
  • The final set saw the visitors use their momentum to score 5 quick points at the start. They would never relinquish their lead as the Panthers were unable to string any rallies together to continue the match.

Olivia Reese led the Panthers with 11 kills. She also had a service ace, 3 digs, and a block. Emily Cleveland was the focus of the Penn State-Behrend defense, but she still was able to record 9 kills and add 6 digs. Tabitha Walker recorded a double-double in the match, dishing out 24 assists and collecting 12 digs. She also had 4 kills. Kayla Maslowski aided in the Panther defensive effort, recording 12 digs.

The Panthers (14-4, 2-1 AMCC) will have the weekend off to recover from their first loss in a month. They will return to action on Tuesday, October 12th, as they hit the road to take on Hilbert. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
