Phillips Drains 30 as Hawks Drop a Close Game at Keuka

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. -Keuka College had no answer for Masia Phillips in the first half but the Wolves regrouped at intermission and earned an 86-84 win before the Thanksgiving holiday break.

Phillips sank 6-of-10 from the floor, hit 4-of-5 beyond the arc and pushed Hilbert to a 46-34 half time lead.  As a team, Hilbert converted 7-of-12 from deep (58%) and committed only one turnover (very late in the opening half).

Trailing 13-8, Hilbert went on a 15-3 run and built a 26-16 lead with 10:20 on the clock.  In that span, Phillips went 3-for-3 from downtown, Zac Cowell hit all four free throws and Joseph Braniecki hit a short jumper swinging the game's momentum in Hilbert's favor.

Ryan Hogan knocked down a pair from beyond the arc and Phillips added another deep hit which gave the Royal and White a 45-30 advantage with 2:30 to go in half.

The tide turned for Hilbert at the start of the second half, as Keuka forced a Hawk timeout trailing 52-45 by 16:26.  Three minutes later, after a high/low pass in the paint, Keuka knotted the game 55-55 and built a 60-57 lead thanks to a 26-11 run.

Hilbert had to battle back the rest of the second period and forced a 65-all score off back-to-back Javon Roberts made 3's.

Alex Karamanos swung the score back in Hilbert's favor from the foul line and from the paint, but the Hawks' transition defense was slow to react, gave up three consecutive lay ups and trailed 77-74.

The Hawks are usually money at the foul line down the stretch but they struggled, hitting only 3 of 8 in the final four minutes.

Masia Phillips finished with five (of 9) made 3-pointers to lead the Hawks with 30 points and a team-high seven rebounds.  Javon Roberts hit 3-of-5 from deep, scored 11 points and Zac Cowell reached double digits with 10 points, going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.  Hunter Martineau continued to share the ball earning game-high honors with eight assists.

Hilbert dropped to 2-2 overall and have a few days to themselves before they head to Alfred State for a 3pm non-conference game Saturday, November 24.
