Serce Saves the Day with Home Run, Pioneers Split with Hilbert

The Alfred State baseball team (15-16, 9-1) split with the Hilbert College Hawks (13-13, 5-3) losing game one but came back to win game two in Alfred, N.Y. on Friday afternoon.

Game one: ASC 7, HC 13

The Pioneers recorded 11 hits, 7 runs, 6 RBIs and 3 errors.

The Hawks recorded 10 hits, 13 runs, 13 RBIs and 1 error.

Pioneer Leaders:

Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

Nick Serce (Irondequoit) went 2-for-3 with 1 run.

Jack Curabba (Shohola, Pa/Delaware Valley) went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) and Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) recorded 1 RBI.

What Happened:

The Pioneers started off strong, but the Hawks came back and won the first game.

During the bottom of the first inning Avallone flied out to center field to bring in Curabba.

In the top of the second inning the Hawks scored twice.

In the bottom of the second inning Curabba singled to right field plating Gavin Moore (Hilton) and Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck). Curabba scored on a wild pitch. Burdett singled to center field bringing home Serce giving the Pioneers a 5-2 lead.

During the third inning the Hawks scored eight unanswered runs taking back the lead, 10-5.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Burdett hit a home run and Lansing grounded out to the shortstop plating Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer).

The Hawks scored the final three runs in the sixth and seventh inning ending the game 13-7.

Pioneer Pitching:

AJ Gartland (Irondequoit) (L, 3-4) pitched 2 innings and allowed 5 hits, 6 runs, walked 2 and struck out 2.

Chris Baldwin (Patchogue- Medford) pitched 1 innings and allowed 2 hits, 4 runs, walked 1 and struck out 0.

Spencer Riehler (Lewiston, NY / Lewiston-Porter) pitched 4 innings and allowed 3 hits, 3 runs, walked 3 and struck out 1.

Game two: ASC 4, HC 3 (7 innings due to darkness)

The Pioneers recorded 6 hits, 4 runs, 4 RBIs and 2 error.

The Hawks recorded 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 RBIs and 2 error.

Pioneer Leaders:

Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI.

Jack Curabba (Shohola, Pa/Delaware Valley) went 1-for-2 with 1 RBI.

Nick Serce (Irondequoit) and Gavin Moore (Hilton) each had 1 RBI.

What happened:

The Pioneers got their payback in game two.

In the bottom of the third inning Curabba grounded out to the pitcher plating Elijah Barinas (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond).

In the bottom of the fourth inning Dickerson singled to left field bringing home Mersmann.

The Hawks scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Moore flied out to center field plating Barinas and Serce hit a home run to win the game.

Pioneer Pitching:

Jack Josephson (W,4-1) (Penfield) pitched 6 innings and allowed 5 hits, 3 runs, walked 2 and struck out 3.

The Pioneers will play a single game at SUNY Oneonta on Tuesday evening at 4:00 PM.
