Women's Basketball Gets Big Lift From Bench In AMCC Win

STEUBENVILLE, Pa. - The Hilbert College women's basketball built a 17-point lead after the first quarter and rolled to another AMCC win at Franciscan University this afternoon.  Ashley Schroeder and Grace Zabawa provided big minutes in the road win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Hawks manufactured 25 points while limiting the Barons to just eight first-quarter points.  Taylor Corts and Demi Battin padded the score board with 15 points behind the arc as Corts connected for three of the five hits.  
  • Hilbert's defensive pressure forced seven turnovers that led to seven points which helped build the 25-8 score heading into the second quarter.
  • Franciscan flipped the switch in the middle period, doubling up the Hawks 22-11 on the scoreboard.
  • Grace Zabawa knocked down a 3-pointer to end the Hawks first offensive possession, before Corts connected twice at the charity stripe and Zabawa sank another at 6:30.
  • Franciscan went on a 10-0 run, pulled within six points and settled for a 36-30 half time score.
  • Both teams matched the other's offensive output in the third, as they each scored nine points behind four buckets and finishing with 1-of-2 at the foul line.
  • Hilbert built an 8-point advantage in the final session which set the Hawks up for a 14-point win.  
  • Hilbert, who hit only 3-of-14 from the floor, went 11-of-13 at the foul line in the last 10-minutes.  
  • Ashley Schroeder strung together a traditional 3-point play at the start of the 4th and Emily Gawlak made both freebies for the 48-44 lead.
  • Schroeder (3-pointer) and Emma Fredo scored the final baskets of the game before the Barons began to foul at the end of the game.
  • Hilbert went 8-of-10 in the final three minutes of the game.
NOTES
  • Taylor Corts led the Hawks with 16 points and nine rebounds while  Ashley Schroeder chipped in 14 points (9-for-11 FT) off the bench.
  • Emily Gawlak added 12 points pulled down five rebounds and led the Hawks with four steals.
  • Demi Battin dished a game-high five assists and Macy Kisner added seven rebounds.  
  • Hilbert shot 31.0 percent from the floor (18-53) making eight 3-pointers and 76.0 percent at the foul line.
  • Estelle Leon led Franciscan with 19 points and 13 rebounds off the bench as the Barons closed the game shooting 38.0 percent from the floor and only 53.3 percent from the foul line.
  • The Hawks held 41-38 advantage in rebounding and cleared the offensive glass for 17 caroms.

The Hawks now prepare for final exams this week but return to action Saturday, December 14 when they host Pitt.-Greensburg in a 3 pm tip.
