Broncos in Florida: Outlast Pitt-Bradford After Rain Delay

FORT MYERS, FL (March 12, 2022) - The bats were hot in Delhi's 4th game in Florida. Each team recorded 15 hits and the Broncos did just enough to outlast Pitt-Bradford, 14-13.

SUNY Delhi (14) vs. Pitt-Bradford (13)

In what turned out to be an important 4th inning, the Broncos exploded for 8 runs after trailing 3-1 entering the inning. The first batter of the 4th grounded out to third and what followed were important runs that helped build a lead Delhi wouldn't give up. Two straight doubles, first by Mel Papuli followed by Jessica Kwasnik, cut the lead in half with the Broncos now down a run. A single by Caitlyn Gallagher and a double by Rhianna Iglesias pushed Delhi into the lead. The Broncos got 4 straight singles and built a 7-3 lead before recording their second out of the inning. Papuli got her second hit of the inning to drive in two more runs. The Broncos got 8 runs home and led 9-3 through 4 innings.

After a bit of a rain delay in the 6th, things turned interesting in the 7th. By this point, the Broncos tacked on a few more runs and stretched the lead to 14-5, scoring four runs in the top half of the final inning. Pitt-Bradford didn't go away easily. The Panthers took advantage of some unsure fielding by Delhi along with three extra-base hits to get within a run. However, they struck out swinging; stranding the tying run on third to end the contest.

Papuli (1-1) picked up the win with only 6 of the 13 runs allowed being earned. Kayla Beers sported a perfect 1.000 on-base percentage for the game, going 4-4 at the plate with a walk and 4 RBIs. Beers scored what turned out to be the winning run of a Katelynn Rose single in the top of the 7th. Zeman, Papuli, Rose and Roselyn Monks each had 2-hit games. Iglesias crossed home plate 4 times for Delhi.

The Broncos will take a day off before resuming play on March 14 against two fellow in-state squads: Alfred State (1PM) and Nazareth (5PM).
