Baseball Adds Another Win to the Season, Payback on Transylvania

The Alfred State baseball team added another win to the season after beating the Transylvania Pioneers 8-7 at Marquard Field in Lexington, Kentucky on Thursday.

The Alfred State Pioneers recorded 13 hits, 8 runs, 5 RBIs and 0 errors.

The Transylvania Pioneers recorded 14 hits, 7 runs, 6 RBIs and 3 errors.

Alfred Pioneer Leaders:

Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) went 3-for-4 with 1 RBI.

Gavin Moore (Hilton) went 3-for-5 with 1 run.

Bobby Sellers (Henrietta, NY / Rush Henrietta) went 1-for-1 with 1 RBI.

What Happened:

Alfred State came out of the gates strong scoring three runs during the top of the first.

Devin Mersmann (Arcade, NY / Pioneer) tripled to right center bringing in Moore and Nick Serce (Irondequoit) hit a sacrifice fly out to center field to plate Mersmann. With bases loaded Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) advanced to second base, Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) advanced to third, and Avallone scored on a wild pitch.

Transylvania scored four unanswered runs, two in the fourth and two in the fifth.

In the top of the seventh Ryan Santiago (Staten Island, NY / HS of Telecommunications) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Lansing tying the game 4-4.

Transylvania scored one in the bottom of the seventh.

During the top of the eighth Alfred State scored four straight runs.

Serce scored off a single from Avallone who scored on a throwing error. Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) singled to third base and Lansing advanced to third then scored on a throwing error by the third baseman. Sellers singled through the left side bringing in Tyler Petery (Schwenksville,PA / Pope John Paul II).

Transylvania scored two more runs in the ninth, but the Pioneers defense was able to shut down their rally for the one-run win.

Alfred Pioneer Pitching:

Jack Josephson (Penfield) pitched 6 innings and allowed 12 hits, 4 runs and struck out 6.

Chris Catoire (W, 1-0) (Brooklyn/Fort Hamilton) pitched 1 innings and allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, walked 0 and struck out 0.

Chris Baldwin (Sv, 1) (Patchogue- Medford) pitched 2 innings and allowed 2 hits, 2 runs, walked 1 and struck out 1.

The Pioneers will play the eighth-ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls at 11 a.m. on Friday.
