HAMBURG, N.Y. –
Shannon Rogers led four players in double-figure scoring as the Hilbert College women's basketball team improved to 8-6 overall after their 61-52 victory over Alfred State College this afternoon.
With their 8th victory this season, the 2015-16 Hawks have established a new win-record since the college joined the AMCC league in 2004-05. Only the 2003-04 women's basketball team had more wins (11W, 15L) than any other Division III women's basketball team at Hilbert.
Rogers and
Katelyn Proy each finished with a double-doubles as they combined for 26 points and 25 rebounds and five total blocks.
Proy picked up an even dozen in both categories, shooting 6-for-7 from inside the lane. She also added a pair of steals and blocks while Rogers passed for four assists and swatted three blocks away. The Division III leader in double-doubles scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds (four offensive).
Kelsi Ebert added 13 points and three steals as
Emily Speidel knocked down a trio of 3-pointers to collect 11 points.
Samantha Heiler (five points) and
Jennifer Colvin (two points) kept the offensive in-check as they were credited with four assists each.
Wyann Jackson and
Lindsay O'Neil each went 2-for2 at the foul line getting their names in the official game book.
Hilbert started the game fast taking a 10-2 lead after four minutes of play. The Hawks went cold for three minutes until Speidel's shot beyond the arc found the bottom of the net at 3:13. Alfred State took their first lead off a long ball with just over two minutes left and regained their one point lead at the quarter break thanks to a pair of free throws with one-second on the clock.
Hilbert found themselves down by four points (20-16) by 8:22 but Rogers' traditional 3-point play and Proy's ensuing lay-in gave the Hawks the lead again. Rogers and Ebert put points on the board for Hilbert as the hosts and Pioneers traded baskets to close the quarter. There were 3 lead changes and twice the score was tied down the stretch. Hilbert carried a one-point 33-32 advantage to the locker room.
The Hawks outscored the 2-11 Alfred State Pioneers 18-10 in the third quarter and played even in the fourth (10-10) to take the victory. Both teams traded baskets for the first four-and-a-half minutes of the third session until Hilbert's Ebert, Proy and Rogers connected for a 6-point run to create enough separation. Ebert and Jackson scored the Hawks final points in the period to grab a 9-point lead (51-42) which held up until the final horn.
Hilbert out-rebounded the visitors 48-32 and grabbed 18 offensive boards.
AMCC action returns this weekend for Hilbert (8-6, 4-3) when the women's team travels to Pitt-Greensburg (5-8, 3-3) for a 3pm contest Saturday, January 16.
