Hawks Improve to 5-2, Corts Tosses In 29 Against Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. - After their 68-54 road win today over Alfred State, the 2018-19 Hilbert College women's basketball team, at 5-2 overall, established the program's highest winning percentage early in the season.

Taylor Corts was credited with almost 50% of the Hawks points, scoring 29 and assisting on four other points on the score board.  The junior guard collected 27 points after three quarters when Hilbert held a 55-41 lead.  She closed the game with seven rebounds.

Alfred State opened the game with a bucket in the paint but the Hawks' responded from downtown to go ahead, 3-2.  There were four lead changes before Hilbert built their largest lead (13-6) fueled by a pair of deep shots (Demi Battin and Corts) that sandwiched Alayna DeFazio's jumper.

Battin's shot beyond the arc at 6:10 in the second quarter lifted Hilbert to the game's first double-digit difference (26-16) and back-to-back possessions gave the Hawks a 12-point advantage mid-way through the session.

Corts continued her hot hand after intermission, knocking down three consecutive 3-pointers which gave Hilbert an 18-point lead at 4:33.  The Hawks outscored the Pioneers 19-9 in the third frame with Corts carrying the Royal and White with 12 points.

Hilbert's offense slowed slightly in the fourth as Alfred State outscored the visitors 15-13 setting the final 14-point margin.

Hilbert hit 21 of 59 field goal attempts (35.6%) while pouring in 9 of 24 from beyond the arc (37.5%). The Hawks were proficient from the foul line connecting on 17 of 23 attempts.

Alfred State finished the game hitting 27.8% from the floor, scored only two of 17 behind the 3-point line and 75% at the charity stripe.  The Pioneers held a 51-44 advantage on the glass while grabbing 24 offensive rebounds.

Ashley Repine battled foul trouble and tossed in 11 points while Katelyn Proy grabbed 10 rebounds and scored eight points.

Emily Gawlak (three offensive rebounds, four steals) and Demi Battin (eight points) shared the ball well, credited with six and five assists respectively.  And Emma Fredo gave the Hawks a big lift on the glass pulling down five rebounds.

Hilbert opens up the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference portion of their schedule with a Buffalo Cup contest at D'Youville College (2-2) Wednesday, November 28.
