Women's Basketball Improves to 5-1 In AMCC Play With Road Victory Over Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. - Senior Emily Gawlak finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while fellow senior Ashley Repine added 13 points and 10 rebounds in her second game back from injury to lift the Hawks to a 67-58 AMCC victory at Alfred State.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams opened the game matching each other basket for basket over the first three minutes of action. 
  • Alfred State broke the 4-4 tie with an 8-2 run led by Rayanna Anderson who sunk a pair of threes to build a 12-6 lead for the Pioneers with 3:43 remaining in the opening quarter.
  • Hilbert responded with an 8-3 run to close out the first quarter, sparked by Ashley Repine and finished off by a Taylor Corts 3-pointer to swing the momentum to close out the first quarter.
  • The second quarter was all Hilbert as they turned up the pressure on the defensive end and created high percentage shots on offense, resulting in 16 unanswered points to open the quarter.
  • From the 3:43 mark in the first quarter to 0:34 remaining in the half, the Hawks outscored the Pioneers by a 31-7 margin led by a trio of seniors in Emily Gawlak, Taylor Corts and Ashley Repine.
  • Hilbert went into the intermission with a 37-21 advantage. Ashley Repine led the way in the opening half with 11 points in just 8 minutes of action.
  • Alfred State wouldn't go down without a fight, as they slowly crawled back into the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 22-13 over the first 9:35 of the third quarter.
  • In the closing seconds of the third, Taylor Corts picked up a steal on the defensive end resulting in a fastbreak and a pair of free throw makes to put the Hawks up nine heading into the final frame.
  • Hilbert used a balanced attack throughout the fourth to maintain a double digit lead throughout the majority of the final quarter of play, making key baskets down the stretch to cement the road victory.
GAME NOTES
  • Taylor Corts finished with 15 points in the game, moving her into second place in program history with 1093 career points. The Ontario, NY native currently sits 182 points behind the program's all-time career leader Kelsi Ebert '18 with 1275.
  • Emily Gawlak led the Hawks scoring with 20 points, while Gawlak and Macy Kisner each grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Kisner also finished with a team-high five assists.
  • Hilbert shot 24 of 63 (38.1%) from the floor, including 4 of 17 (23.5%) from the 3-point line and 15 of 22 (68.2%) from the charity stripe.
  • Alfred State finished 25 of 80 from the field (31.3%), while going 4 of 18 (22.2%) from the 3-point line. The Pioneers shot just seven free throws, making four of them (57.1%).
  • The Hawks bench scoring and ability to get to the free throw line was the major difference in the game as the Hawks bench outscored the Pioneers bench 21-2, and Hilbert sunk 15 free throws to Alfred State's four.
