Pioneers Clinch AMCC Postseason with Sweep of Pitt Greensburg

The Alfred State baseball team earned a spot in the AMCC postseason with a sweep of Pitt Greensburg on Monday. The Pioneers scored three in the 6th to take the opener 5-3 and completed the sweep with another 5-3 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin Perth) got the Pioneers on the board in the 1st when he lifted a sac fly to left. Brody Bonadio's triple in the 3rd tied it and Chris Common gave UPG the lead two batters later. Jack Henby (Hornell) tied it in the 4th when his hit a RBI grounder to first to score Pingitore. Chris Common made it 3-2 in the 5th when he lifted a sac fly to center.

In the decisive 6th inning, Colin Johnson (Alfred Almond) led off with a single and went to second after a sac bunt by Pingitore. Dan Woodward (Honeoye) followed with a single to center to put runners on the corners. Henby stepped in and put down a perfect squeeze bunt. The attempt to throw Henby out at first was wild and went all the way into the corner. On the play, Woodward scored easily and Henby kept running and was able to dive into home before the relay throw.

Johnson and Woodward were each for 2 for 3 for the Pioneers while Henby drove in a pair. Andrew Santobuono (Franklin/Unatego) earned his fifth win of the season with a complete game effort. He allowed three runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out 12. 

In game two, Tyler Holland gave the Bobcats the lead in the 1st when he collected a RBI groundout. In the bottom of the inning, Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) tied it up with a double to left. Henby gave the Pioneers their first lead in the game in the 4th when he lifted a sac fly to right. In the 6th, the blue & gold added three insurance runs. Pingitore had a RBI double that scored Burdett and a throwing error allowed Tim Holler (Brewster) to score. Henby followed with a RBI single to left to make it 5-1.

UPG tried to mouunt a rally in the 9th. Ben Green hit a RBI triple after Bonadio led off the inning with a single. Holland drove in Green on a ground out to cut it to 5-3 but the Bobcats would not get any closer.

Johnson was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits in the nightcap finishing 2 for 3. Henby drove in a pair of runs for the second straight game. AJ Gartland (Irondequoit) earned the win with five innings out of the pen. He allowed two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out one.

In between games, the coaching staff honored the senior class, Gabe Lewis (Arkport), Garrett Mack (Avon), Andy Pichardo (Queens/Academy of American Studies), Nick Geyer (Newburg Free), Woodward, and Danny Doran (Irondequoit), playing in their final home games. 

Alfred State will be the #5 seed in the AMCC Tournament which begins on Saturday (5/4). They will travel to the #4 seed Mt. Aloysius. The two teams split a pair of games last Monday.

The Pioneers head to Fredonia on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. contest with the Blue Devils. The contest will be the final game for Alfred State prior to the AMCC Tournament.
