Four Pioneers Score in Wild Battle

Four different Pioneers found the back of the net as the Alfred State women's soccer team lost a wild 6-4 battle to Penn State Altoona on Saturday.

Sadie McConnell started the scoring with a goal 13:24 into the game to give Altoona the lead. Just under nine minutes later Brooke Scianna (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill) tied it up on a penalty kick. Annaliese Ziemann (Lancaster) made it 2-1 six minutes later when she scored her first of the season after getting set up by Alyssa Delany (Hornell). 

Kierra Irwin scored her first of three goals on the day on a PK 34:41 into the game to tie it at 2-2 and McConnell gave the Lions the lead for good with just 28 seconds left in the half after getting a pass from Irwin.

Irwin gave the Lions a two-goal lead, 4-2, 2:51 into the 2nd half before Maggie Meyer (Red Creek) found the back of the net after getting a pass from Ziemann. Irwin completed her hat trick in the 68th minute.

The Pioneers didn't give up as Abby King (Holland) cut the lead back to one with just over nine minutes remaining in the game when she scored after getting a pass from Angela Martone (Candor). 

The Lions (3-5-1, 1-1 AMCC) put the game out of reach in the 83rd minute when Sarah Huston scored from KK Wolfe.

Alfred State held a slight 17 to 16 shot advantage in the game.

The Pioneers are right back on their home turf on Tuesday evening when they take on Medaille at 8:15 p.m.
