Hawks Hold On In a 62-57 Victory, Improve to 6-2 in AMCC

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Nicholas Parucki stepped back beyond the three-point line and knocked it in from downtown which lifted Hilbert to a 62-57 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory over Mt. Aloysius College this afternoon.

The Hawks (9-5 overall) improved to 6-2 in league play and dropped Mt. Aloysius to 1-7 in AMCC action and 1-13 overall.

Parucki netted 22 points, hitting 9-of-11 shots from the floor and was perfect from beyond the arc.  He was the only player Hilbert player to post double figure scoring but all 10 Hawks scored and earned at least one rebound in the victory.

Hilbert held a 13-board advantage on the glass (45-33) and earned 15 assists on the team's 24 buckets.

The Royal and White surrendered the lead only once in the first half (9-10) and played through a pair of knotted scores.  Hunter Martineau and Parucki hit twice before the break which gave Hilbert a low-scoring 24-20 first half lead.

Twice Hilbert was able to extend their lead to six points after intermission but the Mounties crept back into the game from the foul line, hitting four consecutive freebies before they took only their second lead in the game at 13:08 off a fast break lay-up.

Each team traded hoops until Tyler Aquilina was credited with a jumper and an "and-one" which set a 39-38 Hilbert advantage.

Martineau hooked Parucki up in the paint and that started a 6-0 Hilbert run, but Mt. Aloysius responded with a 6-0 run of their own, resetting the score to a one-point game.

Neither team was able to stretch the difference to more than a one-possession game until Parucki launched one of his favorite shots from deep with just five seconds left on the shot clock.  His make gave Hilbert a 60-55 lead and then he made a pair of free throws for the final score.

Aquilina added nine points and Masia Phillips gave the Hawks seven points, four assists and shared team-high rebounding honors (six boards) with Joseph Braniecki.  Martineau maintained his season average finishing with seven assists today.

Hilbert, who just played four games in eight days last week, returns to AMCC action with three games this week.  Monday January 15 they will travel to D'Youville College, then host Pitt-Bradford Wednesday, January 17.  They will finish the week with a road game at Penn State Altoona January 20.
