Women's Basketball Improves to 9-2, Takes Down Mt. Aloysius

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team continues to travel in uncharted waters as they improved to 9-2 overall after they earned a 63-52 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory over Mt. Aloysius College this afternoon.

Hilbert women's basketball is 25-5 dating back to December 16, 2017.

The Hawks remained at a perfect 4-0 league record while they dropped the Mounties to 2-2 in league play and 2-7 overall.

Taylor Corts shot to game-high scoring honors, hitting 50% from the floor (4-of-7 beyond the arc) and 5-of-6 at the charity stripe to total 19 points in 35 minutes of action.

Katelyn Proy reached for 13 points while Emily Gawlak led the Hawks with 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals while chipping in six points after never taking a seat on the sideline.

Demi Battin was the game's second leading rebounder with seven and she garnered a pair of deep shots in the victory.

After a very slow opening quarter, both Hilbert and Mt. Aloysius picked up the pace during the second session.  The Hawks pounded the ball inside early before they knocked down four 3-pointers.  Corts collected a pair from deep while Alayna DeFazio and
Battin reached beyond the arc before intermission.

Mt. Aloysius' interior defense kept them in the game early as they forced eight Hilbert turnovers before the break.

DeFazio's long ball lifted Hilbert to their first double figure lead (38-28) and Corts followed that hit with another three-pointer on the next trip down the floor giving the Hawks a 10-point cushion heading into the final quarter.

Natassia West battled for perfect weakside rebounding position at the start of the fourth and elevated the Hawks to a 45-33 lead with over eight minutes left in the game.

The Mounties went on a 10-2 run and sliced the difference to five points 48-43 with 3:26 remaining.  Battin knocked down a big 3-pointer on Hilbert's next possession and that took the wind out of Mt. Aloysius sails.

The taller Hawks held a 44-25 edge on the glass and hit 15-of-19 from the foul line in the victory.

With final exams upon us, the women's basketball team has a six-day break from competition.  The Hawks return to the hardwood for a 2pm game at La Roche College December 15.
