Men’s Tennis Sweeps Pennsylvania Doubleheader

ERIE, Pa. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team swept their doubleheader against nonconference foes Penn St. University at Behrend and University of Pittsburgh at Bradford by final scores of 8-1 and 9-0, respectively. Both matches took place on the Penn St.-Behrend Tennis Courts. 

These two matches closed out the fall portion of the season for BW (5-0) who finished undefeated. 

Match 1

The Yellow Jackets began the day with a victory over Penn St.-Behrend by a final score of 8-1. BW opened the match taking all three doubles matches. The No. 1 duo of freshman Matt McGee (Ottawa Hills) and junior Trey Kernan (Penfield, N.Y.) continued their dominating run in the fall with an 8-1 win. In the No. 2 spot, the freshman pair of Aidan Hicks (Oneida, N.Y.) and Adam Zeidler (Bay Village/Bay) took home a victory with a score of 8-5. In the final match, junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC Anthony Tosatto (Creston/Norwayne) and senior Edwin Schartman (Westlake) secured a win by a final of 8-4. 

In the singles portion of the match, BW won five of the six matches. McGee won in the No.1 spot, to stay undefeated on the year with scores of 6-1, 6-3. Kernan also stayed undefeated with his victory in the No. 2 spot. He won with scores of 6-2, 6-1. In the No. 4 spot, Tosatto got his second victory of the day in three sets with scores of 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (9). In the match that secured the Yellow Jackets victory, Ziedler won in two sets with scores of 6-1, 6-1. In the No. 6, freshman Jack Hindman (Avon) swept the competition in two sets with two 6-0 wins.

Match 2

Next up for BW was Pitt. Bradford, who the Yellow Jackets defeated 9-0.  

The Yellow Jackets continued their great day in doubles, once again sweeping the three matches. In the No.1 spot, freshmen Ziedler and Hindman paired up to take home a 8-1 victory. In the No. 2 spot, Schartman and freshman Caleb Reed (Wilmington) secured an 8-0 victory. Also securing an 8-0 victory was the No. 3 group of junior Academic All-OAC Mateo Gonzalez (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville South) and sophomore Shahzeb Malik (Strongsville). This was the first win of Malik's collegiate career in his first ever match. 

In the singles portion, BW went six for six only losing three total points. The Yellow Jackets took home four 6-0, 6-0 victories. Zielder, Schartman, Hindman, and Gonzalez were the four to sweep their opponents.Schartman's match was the clinching victory for BW. Gonzalez's two wins his first wins in his first action of the year. Reed won the No. 4 spot with scores of 6-1, 6-0. In the No. 6 spot, Malik took home his first singles win with scores of 6-0, 6-2.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday, October 1 when they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Championships at Kalamazoo College. The matches will span three days from Friday to Sunday.
