HAMBURG, N.Y. – In a day dedicated the memory of
Billy Stevens, the Hilbert Hawks and Lancaster Bible Chargers were engaged in an evenly played North Eastern Athletic Conference game that was moved to Eden High School early this morning due to field conditions in North Buffalo.
The Chargers took over the game mid-way through the second half and earned a 14-9 road win.
Hilbert built a 5-3 lead by intermission and stayed with the Chargers through the first 12 minutes of the second half, forcing two ties before Lancaster Bible went on an 8-0 run. The Hawks closed the game with two goals, all scored in the final 35 seconds of play.
Lancaster Bible held slight edges on offense attempts: 39-32 in shots and 26-23 shots on goal. The Chargers earned 17 draw controls to Hilbert's 8 and converted 14 of the 17 clear attempts while the Hawks struggled (16 0f 28).
Aaryonah Vaughn,
Calista Mis and
Josephine Ban each earned three points as Vaughn and Lawicki led with a three goals.
Hilbert scored only one off 10 free position shots with Mis getting the only free shot to the back of the net.
Ashley Repine was credited with 12 saves in the cage and led the Hawks with seven ground balls as
Natassia West and Vaughn (2 caused turnovers) each tallied four ground balls.
Billy Stevens fought to the end as he lost his battle to Leukemia, at age 23 this week.
Hilbert (1-9, 0-4 NEAC) will play their second Buffalo Cup game at Dobson Field when they battle Medaille College in NEAC action April 17 at 7pm. The Hawks softball team has moved their home game against D'Youville to the same Dobson Complex Tuesday, so fans can arrive early and spend the day cheering their teams in double Buffalo Cup games beginning at 2:30 pm.
