Panthers Unable to Hold onto Early Momentum, Fall to Redhawks

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team jumped out to an early 11 point lead against 2nd place LaRoche on Monday night but were unable to hold on as they lost to the Redhawks 73-50.

  • The Panthers got off the mark right away as Cailey Barnett was able to hit a three on the Panthers opening possession. Following a LaRoche basket, Pitt-Bradford pushed their lead to 6 as Cassidy King made a mid-range jump shot and Ashley Hall hit a second Panther three. King answered a LaRoche three with a basket inside ad after Alexa Ackerman turned the Redhawks over, Daizjah Brown made a fast-break layup to extend the lead to 12-5. Barnett added a second layup after a LaRoche miss to put Pitt-Bradford ahead 14-7.
  • The Panthers used a 6-0 run over a minute long span to increase their advantage to double digits. Cailey Barnett made the second of two free throws and converted on a LaRoche turnover with a three-pointer. Alexa Ackerman made a layup to end the run and put the Panthers ahead 20-9. Unfortunately, the Panthers were kept off the board for the final 3:30 of the quarter, as LaRoche cut the lead to just one point at the end of the quarter.
  • In the second, the Redhawks quickly took the lead, but a Brown free throw and fastbreak layup restored the Panther lead. The teams traded baskets until LaRoche scored on back-to-back possessions to go up 4, but Pitt-Bradford responded with a Barnett layup and Avery Benzel hook shot to tie the game back up at 29. The Redhawks outscored the Panthers 9-5 over the final four minutes of the half, as the Panthers were only able to score on jump shots from Brown and Emily Bethel and a Benzel free throw. They went into the half trailing 38-34.
  • The Panthers struggled to regain their rhythm after the break, as they were limited to a Hall corner three over the first half of the quarter. The Panthers were able to step up on defense however, as a King putback layup got the lead back to 4 points with 4:36 to go in the third. Avery Benzel hit another three to finish the scoring for the Panthers in the third as LaRoche took a 48-42 advantage into the 4th.
  • In the final period, the visitors exploded, quickly extending their lead to 13 points until Brown made a jump shot to end a four-minute scoreless stretch. Unfortunately, the basket only slowed the LaRoche attack, as they were able to continue to add to their lead, pushing it to 23 points. Allanah Allen finished the scoring for Pitt-Bradford with a putback layup.

Cailey Barnett led the Panthers with 11 points as she was limited to only 22 minutes due to foul trouble. Avery Benzel also reached double digits, scoring 10 points on 3-6 from the field, including 1-1 from three. Cassidy King grabbed 11 rebounds and added 8 points.

The Panthers fall to 3-20 on the season with a 1-14 record in AMCC play. Their season will come to a close on Wednesday evening, as they host Hilbert at 5:30 p.m.
