Big 2nd Quarter lifts Pioneers past Hawks

The Alfred State women's basketball team outscored Hilbert 13 to 4 in the 2nd quarter as they earned their first AMCC victory, 49-40, on Wednesday evening.

The Pioneers never trailed in the game. They held a slight 11-9 lead after the first ten minutes and then took a 24-11 lead into the half after their big 2nd quarter. Hilbert had their best offensive quarter in the 3rd and trailed by eight, 38-30, heading into the final quarter. The Hawks cut the lead to six, 46-40, in the final minute but Alfred State scored the final three points of the game from the foul line to seal the victory.

Falyn Lewis-Ellison (Rexville, NY, Whitesville) led three Pioneers in double figures with 13 points. Faith McCombs (Amityville, NY/Copaigue) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 boards while Taylor Benjamin (Newark Valley, NY/Newark Valley) finished with 10 points, four steals, four rebounds, and three assists. Calesta Reigelman (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and Jenna George (Dansville, NY/Dansville) each chipped in seven.

Alfred State was 5 for 11 from the field in their big 2nd quarter and finished the game shooting 34.5% from the field. They held Hilbert to 28.3% shooting on the game and forced the Hawks into 21 turnovers.

Hilbert was led by Kelsey Schlagenhauf who finished with nine points and 11 rebounds. Alesia Hamm chipped in eight points and 12 boards.

The Pioneers head to Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday for a 4 p.m. AMCC contest vs. LaRoche.
