Pioneers Lose to Cross-County Rival Houghton

The Alfred State Women's Basketball team fell in tonights matchup against Houghton 80-47. The cross-county rival Highlanders are now 5-0 to start their season.

The Pioneers ended the first quarter down only three points 16-13. Led by Taylor Benjamin (Newark Valley, NY / Newark Valley) who had seven points on 3-4 shooting in the first, Alfred State fought off the Highlanders attempts to extend their lead. Alfred State went into the locker room down 35-20 at the half. A strong third quarter by Houghton put the game out of reach.

Taylor Benjamin led the Pioneers in scoring with 13 on 6-9 shooting and 1-2 from three. Benjamin tacked on four assists on the night and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Lindsey Weidman (East Bethany, NY / East Bethany) was right behind Benjamin with 12 points. Weidman capitalized on her free-throw opportunities as she went 6-8 from the line.

Carlee Miller was the scoring leader for Houghton with 19 points, she went 8-13 from the field. Crysta Lacrosse tallied 18 points and five assists for the Highlanders.

The Pioneers are back in action on December 8, as they travel to Brockport for a game set to tip-off at 6 p.m.
